Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • Applicants will preferably have a minimum of five GCSE passes including English Language and Mathematics* at grade C or above / grade 4 or above (for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England) and 32 UCAS Tariff Points from at least 1 A Level (or equivalent).

  • Degree:

  • Five GCSE passes including English Language and Mathematics* at grade C or above (grade 4 or above for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England) , plus 112 points from at least two A levels (or equivalent)  

  • Typical offers may include:

  • 112 points from at least two A levels to include grades CC; Welsh Baccalaureate – Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate considered as the third subject

  • RQF BTEC National Extended Diploma/Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma DMM

  • 112 points from at least two Scottish Advanced Highers to include grades DD. Scottish Highers are also considered, either on their own or in combination with Advanced Highers

  • 112 points from the Irish Leaving Certificate at Highers to include 2 x H2 grades.  Higher level subjects only considered with a minimum grade H4

  • 112 points from the Access to Higher Education Diploma

  • Entry requirements differ from course to course. The University values both work experience and academic qualifications and will consider students from a wide range of academic backgrounds.

  • You may also need to undertake an English qualification before being admitted onto a course.

Course Information

The BA (Hons) Advertising and Marketing Management at Cardiff Met is a marketing specialist degree which has been developed in conjunction with the Institute of Practitioners of Advertising (IPA) syllabus ensuring that teaching content is well aligned to industry expectations. The course has a great reputation for its vocational orientation - becoming a 'Met Marketer' will enable you to gain both the academic knowledge and practical skills needed to gain employment in the advertising and marketing industry.

The new degree will seek accreditation from the IPA and will enable students to develop the skills and ability to think creatively and adopt the latest tools in modern integrated advertising campaigns. Advertising continues to enjoy a high profile within the marketing communications sector especially with regard to brand building activities. 

This course offers students the chance to develop their knowledge and skills to become highly informed in all aspects of advertising. Enabling students to develop and plan advertising campaigns in conjunction with other marketing activities, promotion, direct and digital media. This degree also incorporates important elements of the wider marketing area in order to ensure that students can enter the graduate market able to contribute effectively to all elements of marketing. You will be well equipped with a range of practical skills as you will be taught to use industry standard software equipping you with visual skills, alongside developing verbal and written communication skills.

In addition to this, as a Met-Marketer you will be able to participate in our CIM Student chapter and follow in the footsteps of our award students by participating in the CIM based creative and entrepreneurial activities. The competition will give you enable you to experience what it is like to work for an marketing agency by working on a campaign for a well-known industry brand with the top 12-finalists being invited to pitch their ideas to the client face-to-face. 

The course lecturers have both academic knowledge and industry experience to develop the skills you need to become highly employable marketing graduates- just read Nick Saunders story . You will enter a 'think tank' of advertising and marketing, putting your knowledge and skills into practice during your assessments and work placement opportunities. An optional work placement year between your second and final year enhances employability and exposes students to valuable experience and networking opportunities within the industry.

Foundation Year (Year 0)

This programme can incorporate a Foundation Year, which is intended for students wishing to enrol onto the three-year honours degree, who fall into one of the following categories:

​​1. Students who have not achieved the required A-Level points (or equivalent) score to enter the first year of the degree programme.
2. Mature students who have been out of the formal education system for some time.

Degree

The course integrates ‘real world’ experience into our teaching practices to enable a clear understanding of the Marketing Management process. Assignments are based on industry examples and there are also guest lecturers from practitioners from companies. 

You will also be given the option of taking a language as an extracurricular activity and to study abroad for a semester to broaden your experience and skills; all an advantage in achieving success in an Advertising and Marketing career.

Year One

You will follow 120 credits of core modules:

    Year Two
    You will follow 100 credits of core modules and you can choose 20 credits of optional modules:

  • Digital Analytics – Web, Mobile & Marketing (20) 

  • Marketing Research Methods (20) 

  • Advertising in Practice including Work Placement (20)

Year three for students not taking the year of experience option, or Year Four for those students taking the practical experience option. 

Students follow follow 100 credits of core modules and then choose 20 credits of option modules.

  • Year three/four will also provide you with an option of researching, writing and presenting a Marketing Plan. Our students have found this very useful, using their skills and knowledge to address the requirements of organisations. You will work with organisations to address specific marketing issues and gain a high level of experience, as well as forming good working relationships with the organisations. This will be of great benefit to your career.

    In year two there you will be supported to find a relevant and useful fashion related work placement. The work placement provides the experience of putting the theory into practice and observing how the theory is used in an organisation, first-hand. This has been very well received by employers and will give you an advantage when applying for jobs after graduation. 

    Year in Industry: The option of spending a year in industry between the 2nd and final years has been included to allow you to complete the degree with a level of practical experience. This option of practical experience can be incorporated in the three-year degree course undertaking practical work in industry during term time or in holiday breaks during the course.

Advertising continues to enjoy a high profile within the marketing communications sector. This course will prepare students for a range of jobs including agency roles such as account executive, conceptual creative, digital and press planner and buyer, or in-house positions such as press assistant, social media analyst and digital display executive.

During this course you will develop the key skills and understanding required for business with specialism in marketing management central to all business functions. On successful completion of the course you will have the skills to gain a position in marketing management, putting your skills to use in positions in advertising, marketing research, sales management, product management, customer service, public relations, and business management. 

This course has been designed in conjunction with the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), in order to provide you with an opportunity to gain exemptions from their professional qualifications. You will also be able to join the our CIM student chapter which encourages all students to engage in our marketing learning community through organising organise key speakers and managing marketing-focused events. Incorporate dynamic speakers and helpful networking events will enhance your learning experience. Finally, you will be able to engage in entrepreneurial activities such as entering the CIM Pitch.

The aim of the course is that study and practical experience give the best prospect of employability at the end of the degree course. As such, you have the opportunity to graduate with a wide base of marketing knowledge and the potential to be a specialist in strategic use of PR, marketing, digital marketing, integrated marketing communications, branding and global marketing. Furthermore, you will have had ‘real-world’ experience, the chance to engage in our CIM learning community.
