Course Information

Please select the UCAS code W100 if you wish to apply for entry into Year 1 in the School of Art, a general year in which you will experience a wide range of options including painting, photography, sculpture and intermedia art. At the end of Year 1 you will be transferred to one of the following specialist programmes within the School of Art:

  • W900 Intermedia Art

  • W120 Painting

  • W640 Photography

  • W130 Sculpture

We introduce you to studio practice, workshops and the types of teaching you will experience in your programme of study. For example: What a project brief is for, what a crit is, how a seminar works, what to expect from a tutorial, what feedback is for and how you use it. We introduce you to key visual culture texts, methods and methodologies of art theory and practice.

As the year progresses you have project options to enable you to specialise in the subject most appropriate to your work. In semester two students make decisions about which programme they wish to study supported by feedback and advice from staff.

One of the most distinctive aspects of your studies within the School of Art will be the studio. All students will spend the majority of their time within dedicated studio spaces and/or workshops and it is important to realise that the experience of these spaces will be quite distinct from your experience of lecture and seminar rooms. You need to spend time in them, as the making of art is a time-based activity that requires a disciplined approach.

Year 1 introduces the culture of studio and workshop practice and encourages an independent approach to making work supported by a structured timetable of projects, tutorials, crits, lectures and seminars.

We have been at the forefront of introducing option courses, providing you with choices that permit a breadth and depth of subjects. We recognise your desire to immerse yourself in your discipline but believe your learning is enhanced if you are exposed to a wider range of methods and knowledge beyond the confines of the studio.

There are many optional course permutations available to you but we imagine your choices would include a mix of art and other courses available across the wider College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences - subject to availability.

Year 1

Each of our four-year BA (Hons) Art programmes shares common elements of study during the early part of Year 1. Throughout Year 1 you will work with tutors to ascertain your strengths and preferences, and select which of the specialist BA (Hons) programmes you wish to pursue. The choice of option courses in Year 1 comprises a total of 40 credits, nominally made up of two 20-credit courses.

Please note that all students accepted into Year 1 Art are guaranteed a place in their chosen Art specialism from Year 2 onwards, provided they have completed Year 1 study to a satisfactory standard.

Year 2

As for your chosen Art specialism.

Year 3

As for your chosen Art specialism.

Year 4

As for your chosen Art specialism.
