Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • Students will have achieved NCEA Level 3 and met New Zealand university entrance requirements including:
  • Three subjects at Level 3, each with a minimum of 14 credits from NZQA’s list of approved subjects (normally including a mathematics subject and a science or technology subject), and
  • Literacy - 10 credits at Level 2 or above, made up of 5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing, and
  • Numeracy - 10 credits at Level 1 or above, or
  • Completed the New Zealand Diploma in Construction or equivalent
  • Mature Applicants (20 years of age and above) 
  • Not with standing the above admission criteria, mature aged applicants who can show evidence of ability to succeed in the programmes may be considered for admission, provided they have successfully completed an approved course or programme, or have relevant industry experience, which is deemed to meet the required standard for entry.

English requirements

  • Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:
  • IELTS test - Academic score of 6 with no band score lower than 5.5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 550 (with an essay score 5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 60 (with a writing score of 18)
  • Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools or C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency with a score of 169. No less than 162 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level b) Current: a) Level 4 (Academic) b) Level 4 (Academic)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 50 with no band score lower than 42
  • Language Cert - C1 Expert IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than distinction in any band

Course Information

The Bachelor of Construction will prepare you for a career at any level in the construction industry.

You will learn about and get practical experience in construction practices and technology, building services, health and safety management, construction methodologies and more.

Tailor your degree to your career goals by choosing one of three specialisations Construction Management, Project Management or Quantity Surveying.

Graduates of this programme will be proficient in areas such as:

Industry Skills & Knowledge

  • Understanding industry norms, trends and practices in the construction industry
  • Undertake measurement and estimation processes and prepare tender documents
  • Evaluate and advise on sustainable construction materials, methods and technologies
  • Manage quality assurance
  • Apply analytical, practical and research capabilities to unfamiliar situations. 

Financial and Project Management

  • Financial management of construction projects
  • Design, evaluate and apply health and safety management systems
  • Evaluate, advise on and manage risks associated with construction projects
  • Evaluate and apply relevant legislation
  • Plan and manage construction projects using project management principles, tools and techniques
  • Assess efficiency and productivity.

Business Management & Communication skills

  • Recognise potential dispute scenarios and engage in dispute resolution processes
  • Manage employment relations
  • Engage in professional visual, written and verbal communication.
