English requirements:

If English is not your first language or you've received your education in a language other than English, students must produce evidence of their English Language Proficiency:

  • ELTS overall band of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT 88
  • CAEL 70, no sub-test band score less than 60
  • PTE Academic 58
  • Conestoga English Language Test (CELT) Band 6

Other requirements:

  • Grade 12 compulsory English, C or U, or equivalent, OR Conestoga College Preparatory Communications
  • Grade 12 Mathematics, C or U, or equivalent, or Conestoga College Preparatory Mathematics for Technology & Apprenticeship
  • Applicants not meeting the math admission requirements may arrange for testing to assess mathematical ability.
  • To be considered for admission to the co-op stream, students must have a minimum 70% session weighted average and no course failures.
  • Basic computer literacy in spreadsheets and word processing is expected.
  • Academic eligibility for a co-op work term is based on the term that occurs two terms prior to any work term. If this term is also a co-op work term, then work term eligibility will be based on the student's achievement during the preceding academic term.
  • Should a student's academic performance decline considerably (including cumulative missed courses) during the term just prior to any work term, the college reserves the right to withdraw the student from the upcoming work term.
  • Students may only fail/defer one work term regardless of the reason(s).
  • Students who do not successfully complete their deferred work term will be removed from the co-op stream.
  • Since only one work term may be failed/deferred regardless of the reason(s), should a subsequent work term be missed/failed/unsecured (not successfully completed for any reason) the student will be immediately removed from the co-op stream.
  • Students who are discontinued are not eligible for co-op work terms.
  • To be eligible for a co-op work term, students are required to achieve a minimum 70% session weighted average and no course failures.

Course Information

About the Program

This three-year advanced diploma program provides students with career opportunities in the field of environmental/civil engineering at the engineering technologist level. The curriculum is designed to provide a balanced education in civil engineering technology and aspects of environmental engineering technology, catering to students' special interests by means of a major project in the third year. Classroom instruction will be complemented by participation at an in-house training session in a local environmental/civil engineering consulting firm, environmental monitoring training in the field, visits to solid-waste management facilities and to sites undergoing environmental remediation. The first two semesters are common with the Civil Engineering Technology program. During the final four semesters, the student will complete courses related to the civil/environmental engineering field. The optional co-op stream includes two co-op work terms.

The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) conditionally recognizes this program as meeting all the academic requirements for certification in the Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) category.

Program Outcomes

  • Develop and use strategies to enhance professional growth and ongoing learning in the civil engineering field.

  • Comply with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with current legislation and regulations.

  • Complete duties and assist in the monitoring that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices in the civil engineering field.

  • Carry out sustainable practices in accordance with contract documents, industry standards and environmental legislative requirements.

  • Collaborate with the project team and communicate effectively with project stakeholders to support civil engineering projects.

  • Collect, process and interpret technical data to produce written and graphical project-related documents.

  • Use industry-specific electronic and digital technologies to support civil engineering projects.

  • Participate in the design and modeling phase of civil engineering projects by applying engineering concepts, basic technical mathematics and principles of science to the review and production of project plans.

  • Perform quality control testing and the monitoring of equipment, materials and methods involved in the implementation and completion of civil engineering projects.

  • Apply teamwork, leadership and interpersonal skills when working individually or within multidisciplinary teams to complete civil engineering projects.

  • Develop soil/groundwater/surface water/air investigation and sampling programs.

  • Collect and prepare environmental samples (groundwater, surface water, soil, sediment, air) for analysis in accordance with accepted protocols.

  • Supervise environmental drilling and monitoring well installation programs.

  • Interpret the results of environmental sampling programs and studies relative to environmental regulations and impacts on the environment.

  • Evaluate and implement state of the art technologies available for the cleanup of contaminated soil and groundwater.

  • Develop, implement, and manage cleanup plans for contaminated sites and accidental spills.

  • Apply environmental regulations and requirements to situations encountered by consultants, planners, municipalities, conservation authorities, industry and contractors.

  • Design and supervise the implementation of the various components of a solid waste management facility including leachate collection and gas control systems, liners and caps, and environmental monitoring systems.

  • Conduct Phase One and Two Environmental Site Assessments
