Admission Requirements

Entry Requirement

  • High School Transcripts: Official high school transcripts or copies certified by your high school or EducationUSA Center. Provide any national testing results, diplomas and/or certificates (e.g. GSCE, IGSCE, A Levels, CAPE, WAEC).

  • University Transcripts: Submit official community college or university transcripts from all previously attended institutions. Provide course syllabi or descriptions for every university course.

  • Credential Evaluation: Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must undergo a course-by-course evaluation conducted by an independent credential evaluation agency. These agencies must be members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Students attending U.S. schools abroad or international schools following a U.S. curriculum abroad do not need to submit a credential evaluation; other exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Transfer Recommendation Form completed by your current or most recent community college or university.

  • Proof of English Language Proficiency

English Requirement

You must submit proof of English Language Proficiency if you are:

  • A High School Applicant who attended all or part of high school in a country where English is not the official language.

  • A Transfer Applicant who attended university in a country where English is not the official language, or you completed less than 24 credits at a university where English is the official language.

Proof of English Language Proficiency can be demonstrated with one of the following tests or successful completion of ELS Level 112.

  • TOEFL: 79 iBT with consistent subsection scores

  • IELTS: 6.5 with consistent subsection scores

  • SAT: 500 evidence-based reading and writing score

  • ACT: 19 composite score with consistent subsection scores

We accept self-reported ACT or SAT scores. We do not accept self-reported TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test scores.

Other Requirement

  • ACT or SAT Scores may be sent directly from the testing agency or self-reported on your application or uploaded to your SJU Admission Account. SAT scores will be super-scored; we'll take your highest composite ACT score.

Course Information

The Asian studies major at Saint Joseph’s University offers courses in history, politics, art, literature, economics, and religious life of Asia. Through the program, you may also receive funding to study in Asia. The Asian studies major has supported student travel to China, India, Vietnam, and Japan, and is constantly working to develop new opportunities.

An interdisciplinary program, Asian studies will help students gain an understanding of Asia, the Persian Gulf, Philippines, China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Taiwan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and the Central Asian Republics of the former Soviet Union.

If you’re looking to better understand these areas, a major or minor in Asian studies is right for you. It is the perfect complement to many majors, ranging from political science to business.

Learning Goals and Objectives

Goal 1: Students will achieve Intermediate Low Oral Proficiency in an Asian language (by ACTFL standards).

Learning Outcome 1.1: Students will be able to communicate effectively in an Asian language

Goal 2: Students will explore Asia's importance in the world through interdisciplinary investigation of the histories, political systems, economies, cultures, and societies of Asia.

Learning Outcome 2.1: Students will be able to apply a variety of tools, methods, and perspectives to investigate and interpret important aspects of the history, politics, geography, economics and culture of contemporary Asian societies.

Goal 3: Students will conduct research about Asia, evaluate data generated by multiple methodologies, and present their findings effectively.

Learning Outcome 3.1: Students will be able to produce cogent, well-organized, and thoroughly researched written and oral presentations on important aspects of East or South Asian language, history, politics, culture and society that display familiarity with the scholarly conventions of the respective disciplines.
