The Bachelor of Science in Autism Behavioral Studies at Saint Joseph's University is designed to meet the growing need for qualified, professionally trained clinicians, educators and researchers.

WHAT IS AN AUTISM BEHAVIORAL STUDIES DEGREE?

There are two tracks within the Autism Behavioral Studies major – a clinical track and a research and advocacy track. Both major tracks cover interventions and support for individuals with autism. The major also includes the following:

  • Principles of teaching and learning

  • Understanding the population

  • Neurophysiology of the brain

  • Biological causes

  • Navigation of medical services

  • Health policy

  • Coping with the stress of a child or family member with autism

  • Coping methods for direct service providers, long-term care, and ancillary services

CLINICAL TRACK

The clinical track includes a strong focus on both theory and practice in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and behavioral intervention. In this track, you can complete the required coursework and field hours, complete the exam and become a nationally Board-Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst® (BCaBA®). Graduates from this track typically enter into direct clinical or educational service, often with a dual major in education or interdisciplinary health services. The Autism Behavioral Studies clinical track can be completed independently but is also a common dual major with education, interdisciplinary health services or psychology.

RESEARCH AND ADVOCACY TRACK

The research and advocacy track includes additional coursework on the topics of resources, advocacy, adult services and transitions. In this track, you'll complete supervised research on a topic of your choice under the guidance and supervision of faculty in areas of education, health services, neuroscience or psychology. The Autism Behavioral Studies research track can be completed independently but is also a common dual major with interdisciplinary health services, biology or psychology.
