Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor degree at least equivalent to New Zealand pass standard;
  • Candidates without a Bachelor degree but with an appropriate mix of a lesser qualification and work experience may be approved for special admission by the Academic Board.

English requirements

  • IELTS 6.0 with no individual band lower than 5.5
  • TOEFL iBT 60 (with a writing score of 18) 
  • Pearson 50
  • TEP 52 or equivalent with no band less than 12;
     

Course Information

The Graduate Diploma in Hospitality Management (GDHM) is a one-year programme.

Designed for graduates of a bachelor’s degree or similar qualification in a discipline other than hospitality management, who wish to gain the knowledge necessary to pursue a career in the hospitality sector.

The programme comprises seven courses, or six courses if the internship option is chosen:

  • 5.101 Principles of Hospitality Management

  • 5.204 Hospitality and Tourism Strategic Management

  • 3.222 Tourism and Hospitality Management

  • 5.303 Integrated Approach to Hospitality Management

  • And three Stage III elective courses selected from Hospitality Management or Tourism Management programmes.

(Please note that not all elective modules are offered every semester).

Internship Options

This option includes the four courses listed above, 5.398 Hospitality Internship, and one Stage III elective course selected from Hospitality Management or Tourism Management programmes.

  • The internship comprises 20 hours per week over 12 weeks (240 hours minimum) in a hospitality establishment to allow students to gain practical knowledge and experience in planning and production, dealing with customers, risk assessment, and planning the implementation of operations for daily events.

  • Internship placements are coordinated via the Student Careers Centre (SCC) and are available at the following hospitality establishments:

  • Hilton Hotels

  • Rydges Hotels

  • The Langham Hotels

  • SkyCity

  • SkyCity Grand Hotel

  • Pullman Hotels

  • Accor Hotels

  • Millennium Hotels

  • Showcase Hospitality

  • Good Group Hospitality

Students are required to keep a detailed log of their experiences and provide a systematic analytical framework for recording and analysing their observations.
