Admission Requirements

Entry requirements:

  • To be eligible, applicants must:
  • Be 16 years or over at the time of commencing study, or 15 years with a school leaving certificate
  • Be proficient in the English language (both written and spoken)
  • Not hold NCEA Level 2 or similar qualifications
  • Enrolment may be subject to an interview process.

English requirements:

  • Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:
  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination –B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level   b) Current:
  • Level 3 (Academic) b) Level 3 (Applied)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B1 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE I with no less than pass in any band

Course Information

The programme is designed to provide learners with relevant skills and work ready attributes to prepare them to enter a range of industries in entry-level positions, or progress to further study, and to provide new ways for learners to achieve NCEA Level 2 and develop pathways that progress to further study, training and employment.

  • Literacy and Numeracy for farming

  • Animal handling and welfare

  • 19116 Demonstrate knowledge of livestock behaviour and animal welfare

  • 19145 Describe hydration, nutrition, and sleep in relation to physical well-being of agriculture workers
  • 23540 Demonstrate knowledge of hazards, hazard control, and the consequences of injury in a rural workplace
  • 23541 Locate hazards, describe safety procedures, and demonstrate safe work practices in a rural workplace
  • 24554 Ride a quad bike on flat terrain in the workplace
  • 24555 Demonstrate knowledge of the safe operation of a motorcycle
  • 24557 Demonstrate knowledge of the safe operation of a quad bike
  • 24629 Feed livestock with supplementary feed as directed
  • 24832 Open and draw out a coil of wire, tie knots, join wire, and prepare wire for transport and storage

Graduates will have developed the skills and knowledge to be employed under supervision in a range of entry level positions within the various industries. Further study may include progression to Level 3 New Zealand Certificates.

Within the vocational pathway programme, learners will gain knowledge and understanding upon which to base their career development decisions, whether this is gaining employment experience, tertiary study at higher levels, trade qualifications, or any combination of these.
