Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

Individuals who meet any one of the following criteria are eligible to attend College of the Desert:

  • Have graduated from high school

  • Have passed the CA High School Proficiency Exam or

  • Have passed the GED Examination or

  • 18 years of age or older and can benefit from instruction

English Requirements

  • Toefl ibt: 40

  • Toefl paper: 400

  • Ielts:4.5

  • Duolingo: 70

  • Eiken: step level 2

Course Information

The College offers a non-transferable degree in Alcohol and Drug Studies. Students earning an associate’s degree in Alcohol and Drug Studies may pursue entry-level positions as supervised chemical dependency counselors or may choose to continue their study in the discipline toward a bachelor’s or graduate degree in psychology or social work. Transfer requirements at four-year colleges and universities vary from institution to institution; students should consult with an academic advisor for specific information regarding the transfer requirements of their preferred college or university.

All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or better. In addition, students will be required to have 75% attendance in these courses.

  • Intro to human services counseling

  • Personal & professional growth

  • Law/ethics: community resources

  • Counseling diverse populations (see item #3 under requirements for internship)

Spring semester

  • Biomedical pharmacology

  • Case management

  • Prevention, intervention and recovery

  • Individual, group & family counseling

  • Dual diagnosis

Internship/practicum (fall & spring)

  • Alcohol & drug: supervised practicum i

  • Alcohol & drug: supervised practicum ii

  • Alcohol & drug supervised internship i

  • Alcohol & drug supervised internship ii

  • Alcohol and drug work experience (maximum of 4 units may be used for work experience.)
