Proof of sufficient English language proficiency

The requirement for sufficient English language proficiency can be met in one of the following ways:

  • By completing English-taught secondary education in Australia, Canada (with the exception of Quebec), Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States of America;

  • By obtaining an International Baccalaureate diploma in English;

  • By obtaining a European Baccalaureate diploma, with the subject English as first or second language (minimum final score result: 6);

If your diploma is not mentioned above, please consult the diploma calculator to see if your prior education exempts you from taking the English language proficiency test.

Approved tests and minimum scores:

  • IELTS (Academic test): a minimum of 6.5 overall and a minimum of 6.0 for each sub-score. The IELTS indicator test is not allowed.

  • Cambridge Assessment English

    • Certificate in Advanced English: 180 points overall and in each skill or

    • Certificate of Proficiency in English: 180 points overall and in each skill.

Test scores must also conform to the following guidelines:

  • Make sure you schedule your English proficiency test before the application deadline.

  • Test scores received after the application deadline are accepted, as long as your English proficiency test was taken before the application deadline.

  • Your English proficiency test score cannot be more than 2 years old before the start date of your programme. For example, if you are applying for the September 2022 intake we do not accept English proficiency tests taken before September 2020.

Be sure to plan your test on time; test dates fill quickly and it can take several weeks for you to receive your results. Applications without a sufficient score or with a test date after the application deadline, will not be accepted.

Course Information

Taught entirely in English, the Bachelor’s programme in English Language and Culture explores the literary, linguistic, and cultural richness of the vast English-speaking world. You will refine your command of the English language and discover the diversity of English through its literature, from its origins to its global expansion and beyond.

The World of English

From its humble beginnings as one of the languages of Britain, English has spread all over the globe and emerged as the international language of science, the media, politics, and technology. Taught exclusively in English, the UvA's Bachelor's in English Language and Culture allows you to explore and deepen your appreciation of the literature and linguistics of the English-speaking world.

As you work your way through the traditional canon and world literature in English from around the globe, you will study the origins and development of the language, diverse World Englishes like Australian, South African, Indian and Singaporean, as well as how they are perceived and represented in the literary and media worlds.

The first year

The first year of the programme provides you with a broad, general overview of the entire field of English studies.

  • The literature courses serve as an introduction to the history, literature and cultural theories of the English language.

  • The linguistics courses introduce you to World Englishes; the origins, development and spread of English, and ways of analysing language in use.

  • In the Academic Writing courses, you will learn and refine various skills necessary for academic writing as well as develop your academic skill set. You will work on improving your argumentation, presentation and research skills using a variety of multimedia tools.

The second and third years

During the second and third years, the programme offers students the opportunity to specialise in one of two tracks: you can choose to specialise in either ‘World Literatures in English’ or ‘English Linguistics and Literature’ through a choice of new and innovative courses, such as ‘Contemporary World Literature’ and ‘Language in Society’.

  • In the linguistics courses, you examine the complex relationship between language and society, both in the present-day as well as over time. The courses in literature explore contemporary literary and cultural theory.

  • In addition to the core courses, you will be able to tailor the programme to your specific interests by choosing from a range of elective courses.

  • In the third year, you will have the opportunity to spend a semester or year studying abroad, and/or completing an internship.
