Admission Requirements

Entry Requirement

  • High School Transcripts: Official high school transcripts or copies certified by your high school or EducationUSA Center. Provide any national testing results, diplomas and/or certificates (e.g. GSCE, IGSCE, A Levels, CAPE, WAEC).

  • University Transcripts: Submit official community college or university transcripts from all previously attended institutions. Provide course syllabi or descriptions for every university course.

  • Credential Evaluation: Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must undergo a course-by-course evaluation conducted by an independent credential evaluation agency. These agencies must be members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). Students attending U.S. schools abroad or international schools following a U.S. curriculum abroad do not need to submit a credential evaluation; other exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.

  • Transfer Recommendation Form completed by your current or most recent community college or university.

  • Proof of English Language Proficiency

English Requirement

You must submit proof of English Language Proficiency if you are:

  • A High School Applicant who attended all or part of high school in a country where English is not the official language.

  • A Transfer Applicant who attended university in a country where English is not the official language, or you completed less than 24 credits at a university where English is the official language.

Proof of English Language Proficiency can be demonstrated with one of the following tests or successful completion of ELS Level 112.

  • TOEFL: 79 iBT with consistent subsection scores

  • IELTS: 6.5 with consistent subsection scores

  • SAT: 500 evidence-based reading and writing score

  • ACT: 19 composite score with consistent subsection scores

We accept self-reported ACT or SAT scores. We do not accept self-reported TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test scores.

Other Requirement

  • ACT or SAT Scores may be sent directly from the testing agency or self-reported on your application or uploaded to your SJU Admission Account. SAT scores will be super-scored; we'll take your highest composite ACT score.

  • Resume uploaded to your SJU Admission Account

Course Information

The department of chemistry's faculty at Saint Joseph's University is diverse in their interests, leading to courses in both the traditional and interdisciplinary areas of chemistry. Throughout your education, chemistry will be emphasized as a laboratory science and, as a major, you will learn basic chemical theories as well as current experimental techniques, using modern instrumentation and computational methods to solve chemical problems.

Chemistry students at Saint Joseph's University have many opportunities to become involved in faculty-directed independent research that investigates problems of current interest. These experiences help you develop a chemist’s analytical skills, critical thinking, creativity and the ability to work as a team. Chemistry majors at Saint Joseph’s University regularly publish their findings in scientific journals and make presentations at regional and national meetings, where many have received recognition and won awards.

The American Chemical Society certifies the bachelor of science degree program in chemistry, and special advisory options are offered for majors interested in the premedical, pre-dental and chemistry and business curriculums.

The five-year B.S./M.S. chemistry-education program is designed for students who wish to become certified secondary school (grades 7-12) science teachers. The program incorporates the four-year B.S. degree in chemistry with additional work during the summer and a fifth year to complete the M.S. in secondary education and become certified. You also have the option to double major in chemistry and education. With careful planning, this double major can be completed in the four undergraduate years. Given the numerous course requirements for the dual degrees and certification, it is important to speak with your chemistry education advisor about this program early on to ensure you are taking appropriate courses.

The chemistry program will prepare you to choose from a wide range of career paths. Our majors pursue graduate study in chemistry or biochemistry, professional degrees in medicine, the health sciences and pharmacology, graduate studies in other fields, including business, government and law and direct employment after graduation.
