In a highly mobile world where the preservation of historical and natural environments present as one of the major challenges facing all societies, heritage has become a touchstone for social and cultural identity, our understanding of modernity, peace and development and our senses of citizenship, custodianship and community. At the same time heritage sites have become significant tourist destinations.
The Heritage and Tourism major in the Bachelor of Social Science introduces contemporary heritage issues and provides an in-depth understanding of tourism as a social phenomenon.
In addition to enabling a critical examination of the relationship between heritage and tourism in a number of settings within Australia and internationally, the major also delivers a strong practical orientation. This allows students to learn beyond the classroom through digitally enhanced field trips and onsite visits, as well as an opportunity to opt into a semester-long placement within the heritage tourism sector.
