English requirements:

If English is not your first language or you've received your education in a language other than English, students must produce evidence of their English Language Proficiency:

  • Internet-based (iBT) TOEFL: 80
  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): 6.0 with no band less than 5.5
  • PTE Academic (Pearson Test English): 53-57

Other requirements:

  • Students are expected to demonstrate the same attention to attendance, punctuality and conduct as required by the business or industry they expect to be employed.
  • Students are required to provide their own specified hand tools, CSA-approved (Omega symbol recommended) footwear, hard hats and safety glasses. The college provides all other tools required.

Course Information

About the Program

This unique program introduces you to a variety of skills in the construction field with each trade-specific component running seven weeks in duration. Students study and practice in carpentry, masonry, HVAC, and welding trades. You receive safety training (general and specific) and skills development in a number of construction areas. There is an opportunity via this program to strengthen math and communication skills to be considered for entry into other post-secondary, trade-related programs.

Program Outcomes

  • Employ tools and materials appropriate to their purpose and function and in keeping with safe work practices within the residential and ICI (industrial, commercial and institutional) sectors.

  • Relate ethical work practices to self as a tradesperson in the construction industry.

  • Solve construction industry problems by assessing the situation and applying mathematics and other problem solving tools and processes.

  • Communicate effectively with a variety of customers, clients and co-workers at the basic apprenticeship level and within the context of the particular trades sector.

  • Interpret relevant codes, specifications plans and construction processes.

  • Work in compliance with the theory and the accepted principles and practices of the construction industry trades.

  • Explain the interrelationships between construction projects and other disciplines including architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering.

  • Identify the use of construction industry specific technologies for current and future applications.

  • Identify the diverse post-secondary opportunities in construction trades spanning apprenticeships, academic and work options.

  • Apply typical computer knowledge and skills required by business, including word-processing, electronic mail, spreadsheets and presentation applications.
