Admission Requirements

Entry requirements:

  • School Leaver
  • Applicants should be 16 years of age, or older, have successfully completed NCEA Level 1 or equivalent, and have achieved a minimum standard of English as demonstrated by a minimum of eight credits at NCEA Level 1 in English.
  • Mature Applicant
  • Consideration will be given to applicants aged 20 years or older who do not meet the entry criteria if they can demonstrate a history of work, industry experience which in the opinion of the Programme Managers exhibits a likelihood of success in the programme of study.
  • All applicants 
  • All applicants may be required to attend an interview. Preference will be given to applicants who have acheived Merit or Excellence in maths, physics and music at or the equivalent of, NCEA Level 2 or above.

English requirements:

  • Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:
  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination –B2 First or B2First for schools with a score of 162.  No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level   b) Current: Level 3 (Academic) b) Level 3 (Applied)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than pass in any band

Course Information

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Implement industry practices, processes and protocols to work effectively as part of a crew and with other departments to meet performance or event requirements
  • Maintain professional conduct and etiquette and apply appropriate communication to respond to internal and external stakeholders
  • Implement safe working procedures and practices for performance and events
  • Apply understanding of the entertainment technology industry to develop own career

Graduates of the Lighting strand will also be able to:

  • Safely install, operate and remove lighting equipment to meet the production and lighting plan requirements for a range of complex performances and events

Graduates of the Live Sound strand will also be able to:

  • Safely install, operate and remove sound equipment to meet the production and sound plan requirements for a range of complex performances and events or a live recording

Career Opportunity

This qualification provides the entertainment industry with technicians who can operate safely, under indirect supervision, in the entertainment and event technology industry.

The qualification includes strands that recognise specialist knowledge and practical skills in various areas relating to entertainment and events technology. Graduates of this qualification will have specialist skills and knowledge in two of the areas covered by the strands.

Graduates can contribute to the cultural, social and economic life of Aotearoa New Zealand.
