You will learn about the stabling, care and exercise of horse in the Sporthorse industry, and also how to safely and effectively carry out activities involving vehicles, machinery and infrastructure with a special focus on equipment used in the equine industry.
This full-year programme includes both the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Level 3) Sporthorse Stable Assistant with the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (Level 3) qualifications.
The Equine programme focuses on Sport horses in areas such as exercising and training horses, preparation of a horse for an event and tending to horse and riders’ requirements at the event. Students complete theory and practical training most days in addition to handling and riding a range of horses.
The Agriculture programme focuses on learning safe and effective use of vehicles, machinery and implements, especially those associated with the equine industry, such as tractors, ATV's PTO driven implements.

New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Stable Assistant):
Attend to the routine day to day requirements of horses in training (10 credits)
Apply skills and knowledge in the routine identification, reporting, and treatment of problems of horses in training, and respond appropriately to emergencies involving horses (10 credits)
Communicate effectively with team members and clients (5 credits)
Apply routine procedures when exercising and training horses for a sporthorse discipline (20 credits)
Conduct the routine preparation of a horse for an event, and attend to horses' and riders' requirements at the event (5 credits)
New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (Level 3):
Could include : Working under supervision as a groom, stable hand or trekking guide.
Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Stable Assistant) Level 3 qualification will have the skills and knowledge to be employed as sporthorse stable assistants. With further work experience and study, graduates may gain employment as sporthorse grooms.
