Admission Requirements

Entry requirements:

  • Applicant must be 16 years or over
  • Applicant must have a reasonable level of fitness required to carry out duties involving horses and can meet the physical demands of stable work
  • Applicants need to have handled horses and have basic riding experience prior to entry to programmes leading to this qualification.

English requirements:

  • Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:
  • IELTS test - General or Academic score of 5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 500 (with an essay score of 4 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 35 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination – B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 154. No less than 154 in each skill.
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level   b) Current: Level 3 (General) or (Workplace) b) Level 3 (General)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) – PTE (Academic) score of 36 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B1 Achiever IESOL (LRWS) with PASS and no less than PASS in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE I with no less than distinction in any band

Course Information

You will learn about the stabling, care and exercise of horse in the Sporthorse industry, and also how to safely and effectively carry out activities involving vehicles, machinery and infrastructure with a special focus on equipment used in the equine industry.

This full-year programme includes both the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Level 3) Sporthorse Stable Assistant with the New Zealand Certificate in Primary Industry Operational Skills (Level 3) qualifications.

The Equine programme focuses on Sport horses in areas such as exercising and training horses, preparation of a horse for an event and tending to horse and riders’ requirements at the event. Students complete theory and practical training most days in addition to handling and riding a range of horses.

The Agriculture programme focuses on learning safe and effective use of vehicles, machinery and implements, especially those associated with the equine industry, such as tractors, ATV's PTO driven implements.

New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Stable Assistant):

Attend to the routine day to day requirements of horses in training (10 credits)

  • Stable vices - signs, causes, prevention 
  • Implementing health requirements 
  • Reporting stable consumables 
  • Preparation of feeds, problems of feeding

Apply skills and knowledge in the routine identification, reporting, and treatment of problems of horses in training, and respond appropriately to emergencies involving horses (10 credits)

  • Anatomy, conformation, action

  • Hoof care and associated problems
  • Administration of treatments 
  • Care following injury 
  • Actions to take in an emergency

Communicate effectively with team members and clients (5 credits)

Apply routine procedures when exercising and training horses for a sporthorse discipline (20 credits)

  • Preparation for exercise

Graduates of the New Zealand Certificate in Equine Skills (Sporthorse Stable Assistant) Level 3 qualification will have the skills and knowledge to be employed as sporthorse stable assistants. With further work experience and study, graduates may gain employment as sporthorse grooms.

Graduates will be able to:

  • Attend to the routine day to day requirements of horses in training
  • Apply skills and knowledge in the routine identification, reporting, and treatment of problems of horses in training, and respond appropriately to emergencies involving horses
  • Communicate effectively with team members and clients 
  • Apply routine procedures when exercising and training horses for a sporthorse discipline
