Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • School Leaver
  • Applicants should be a minimum of 16 years of age (unless an exemption from attending school has been granted) at the commencement of the programme. An exemption from attending school may be granted by a person designated under sections 21 or 26 of the Education Act 1989, by a school principal from a school in which the prospective tauira is registered, or by the Chief Executive of the Ministry of Education. In addition applicants should have successfully completed the NZ Certificate in Te Ara Reo Māori (He Pi Ka Rere) (Level 2) programme of study or be able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

English requirements

  • Applicants from countries with an annual student visa approval rate of at least 80 percent, whose first language is not English, or who come from a country where the language of instruction in schools is not English, are required to provide evidence of having passed an NZQA approved English Proficiency Assessment, or one of the following tests of English language competence in accordance with the NZQA rules below:
  • IELTS test - Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5
  • TOEFL Paper based test (pBT) - Score of 530 (with an essay score of 4.5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet based test (iBT) - Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Cambridge English Examination - B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill
  • OET - Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL - a) Expiring Level   b) Current: Level 3 (Academic) b) Level 3 (Applied)
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) - PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • Language Cert - B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
  • Trinity ISE - ISE II with no less than merit in any band

Course Information

If you know the basics of te reo Māori and want to take it further, here’s your next step. Our safe, encouraging and interactive programme is loved by people from all cultures and backgrounds.

Develop a greater understanding of the Māori culture while you practice and build confidence in your Māori language skills. Learn alongside others at the same level and have fun while you’re doing it.

In this programme you’ll learn a variety of sentence structures using te reo Māori in a range of formal and informal situations. You’ll be able to explain and practice tikanga Māori as well as learning a range of waiata and karakia.

When you finish the course, you’ll have the confidence to advance to full-immersion learning.

You will learn:

  • active and passive sentence structures
  • extending your vocabulary
  • using different tenses
  • distinguishing between Māori and non-Māori sentence structures.

You will know how to:

  • use a variety of sentence structures
  • use te reo Māori in a range of formal and informal situations
  • explain and practice tikanga Māori
  • use a range of waiata and karakia.

You must complete both Level 3 and Level 4 to receive the qualification. You will automatically be enrolled into Level 4 once you enrol into this course.

Upon successful completion of this programme, you will receive the following qualification:

  • New Zealand Certificate in Te Reo (Reo Rua) Level 3 & Level 4

Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • Use Te Reo Māori vocabulary and grammatical structures at an advanced - intermediate level

  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level to show an understanding of their connections to the land and the environment, prominent places, people, histories and stories, as an expression of mana whenua

  • Use Te Reo Māori at an intermediate-level in selected contexts to develop a growing knowledge base of, and an emerging respect for Te Reo, as an expression of mana reo
