Course Information

Our integrated qualification provides the opportunity to explore civil engineering and construction to master’s level. You’ll develop strong leadership skills and learn to manage construction projects from design to completion.

You’ll explore core areas of civil engineering combined with in-depth knowledge of planning, organisation and construction methods in building design.

You will learn with staff active in consultancy and research, with opportunities to get involved in lecturer’s research as part of your studies. Our research strengths include earthquake engineering dynamics and design, advanced geotechnics and rock mechanics, bridge engineering and advanced hydraulics.

Fieldwork, site visits, and projects run with our industry partners give you hands-on experience. You’ll work with students in interdisciplinary project teams on industry-based scenarios, ranging from design briefs to real-world case studies.

The option of a salaried placement year and the opportunity to learn Building Information Modelling (BIM) will give you professional advantage. There is also the opportunity to study abroad in your third year.

Placement year

A placement year offers an excellent opportunity to gain work experience, build a professional network, increase your confidence, develop existing skills and discover new ones. The experience also significantly enhances your CV.

Our students have been on placement in organisations including Mackley, Balfour Beatty, Transport for London and South East Water.

There is also the opportunity to study abroad.

Year 3

Your third year is flexible and can be tailored to your interests. Options include application of design, which is delivered by Mott MacDonald.

Projects include a multidisciplinary group design as well as the design and build of a simple small-scale structure which you will test in the lab.
