The General English course offers an exciting opportunity for people from around the world to learn everyday English in an English-speaking environment. The programme has a general focus suitable for students who need English for everyday contexts or for students preparing to enter the Academic English programme.
If you do not provide evidence of an external examination you will sit an English language placement test during the first week to assess your entry level with the option of further testing to move up to higher levels.
You will receive a University of Waikato College Certificate of Attendance. Individual graded reports are also available.
Choose General English and select 2026 intake. You will be asked to indicate how many weeks you’d like to study (minimum 3 up to maximum 25) and to indicate the start date. The dates for 2026 are published on this page, further down.
If you have an English Proficiency test, we advise to upload it at the application point, otherwise, you will sit an English language placement test during the first week, to assess your entry level.
