The goal of the Master of Music course is to deepen students’ music and music-related knowledge, skills and capacities in their area of interest. It does this by one to one mentoring and teaching, introducing students to research skills related to their creative practice. The suite of electives provides students with the opportunity to broaden their skills relevant to the construction of a working portfolio for both music industry and community contexts. Students may exit the course after the first 4 units (I year full time or 2 years part time) in order to qualify for a Graduate Diploma in Music.
The Masters of Music course is offered with two streams:
Performance Stream:
Students work on perfecting performances of increasing levels of challenge to industry standards. By honing their expressive, technical and academic skills, performers work one on one with a professional teacher to prepare a series of concerts featuring high level solo and ensemble repertoire of their choosing. Students may specialise in jazz, contemporary or classical genres including conducting. See course program below for details.
Contemporary Composition Stream:
Students select four of six options for their major in composition, allowing students to concentrate on both traditional and commercial aspects of the contemporary music industries. Students may study composition in a range of genres learning skills in arranging, sound art, animation, advertising, radio, television and film writing. See course program below for details.
