Fulbright Scholarships: Fulbright New Zealand offers a range of prestigious exchange awards for New Zealand and American graduate students, academics, artists and professionals to study, research, teach or present their work in each other’s countries. Other awards allow institutions to apply for a visiting Fulbright specialist to assist with their development needs.

- Horticulture New Zealand (HortNZ) Scholarships

Horticulture New Zealand (HortNZ) offers scholarships that are open to New Zealand students and trainees who have a special interest in the fruit or vegetable industry and are undergoing significant industry training or education.

There are two types of scholarships you can apply for:

• $500 HortNZ Industry Training Scholarship: this scholarship is available to industry trainees.
• $4500 HortNZ Undergraduate Scholarship: available for students studying towards an under-graduate degree. The package includes $3000 for fees and $1500 towards attending the HortNZ annual conference. This includes registration, travel and accommodation costs
• Each scholarship is for one year only ILT & ILT Foundation – Trades Education and Training Scholarship

Available for students who are completing specific full time trades courses at SIT in Invercargill (contact us to find out what programmes apply) and who live within ILT or ILT Foundation areas and a NZ citizen or permanent resident for a minimum of 12 months prior to the commencement of the course

• Fill out the Invercargill Licensing Trust or ILT Foundation Trade Scholarship application form included with your SIT acceptance letter into your trade course.
• $1000 awarded on completion of course to selected outstanding students

- Norman Jones Foundation

• Available for New Zealand citizens in full-time study, aged 25 or over. Must live in the Southland, Queenstown, Glenorchy, Arrowtown, Heriot or Tapanui areas.
• This Scholarship provides ‘second chance’ education and training opportunities for Southlanders. We invite applications for study grants from people wishing to undertake education to upskill themselves for employment

NZCS Coastal Society

The society offers two scholarships annually to students conducting research that has the potential to contribute towards the aims of the society: NZ $5,000 to support PHD research, and NZ $2,500 to support Masters research.

- Robert Gibson Methodist Trust Board

The Robert Gibson Methodist Trust is a charitable trust with discretionary power to award bursaries to boys, girls, young men & young women who are attending University, Polytechnic, or other approved educational institutions

The Trust's Constitution requires that preference be given to orphans, & to Methodist or Presbyterian students who desire to follow an agricultural course. Nevertheless, assistance from the Trust is not necessarily restricted to those groups

The Trust seeks applications from students with potential, who, because of financial circumstances, may not be able to undertake or continue tertiary education

Value: Applicants who meet these criteria of ability & need may be granted bursaries ranging from $750 to $2000.

- Tuapeka County Bursary Fund

The bursary fund is available to students who reside in the former Tuapeka County and Roxbrgh, Tapanui and Lawrence Borough areas and is designed to assist them in their attendance to tertiary education institutes.

A minimum bursary of $1,000 is available on an annual basis and will be paid to the successful applicant(s) by 1 April

- Valmai Robertson Creative NZ Art Scholarship

This scholarship is to encourage and assist Southland District Council residents and ratepayers wishing to increase their skills through the attendance of development courses, workshops, projects or study in the Arts

The Southland District Council has established a contestable fund of up to $2,500 annually

- Zespri Horticultural Scholarships

Zespri are offering two $10,000 Scholarships to students who have completed at least one year of tertiary study to encourage students to pursue a career in the country’s fast-growing kiwifruit industry. Recipients are supported and mentored throughout their study as well as being given opportunities to network with industry leaders.

Students should have NCEA Level 3 endorsed with merit or higher

Students should have successfully completed or in progress of completing their first year of tertiary study with at least a B+ average

Students must be a New Zealand Citizen or permanent resident to be eligible to apply

Students need to provide examples of how tertiary study will support the New Zealand horticulture industry

Students must also provide evidence of potential leadership skills, service to the community, and/or sporting activities

Get registered with a copy of your CV with Student Services, it will help you be considered for roles when businesses are seeking employees from SIT. There is also a noticeboard with current vacancies in the SIT Student Centre, B Block, 133 Tay St, Invercargill.

Volunteering at local organisations can be a great way for international students to obtain local experience and references – as well as meeting new people and contributing to our local community. Volunteer opportunities are advertised on the board opposite the Employment Office (B-Block).

Southern Institute of Technology (SIT) is pleased to announce an accommodation bursary for students eligible for the Government’s Fees Free policy that comes into effect on 01 January 2018. His worship, Mayor of Invercargill Tim Shadbolt having supported this initiative from the onset has now consolidated his backing by lending his name to the bursary.

Eligibility criteria for the Mayor Tim Shadbolt Accommodation Bursaries for Invercargill will reflect that of the Government’s Fees Free policy. SIT can confirm that eligible students, in addition to getting their first year of tertiary studies for free, will also be able to apply for free shared accommodation at SIT’s apartments in Invercargill for the academic year (40 weeks’ maximum). Alternatively, eligible students at our Invercargill campus can opt to receive a $100/week accommodation bursary regardless of whether they live at home or in rental accommodation. Again, this will be offered for the academic year, for up to 40 weeks’ maximum.
