Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

1. Submit Your Online Admissions Application 

  • Pay the non-refundable $30 application fee in U.S. Dollars. 

 2. Academic Credentials

Freshmen

First time incoming international students who are not educated in a U.S. based or IB curriculum MUST have their high school records evaluated by a NACES accredited evaluation agency. This evaluation must include:

  • Course-by-course list of subjects and grades completed throughout high school career

  • Exam results (e.g.CXC, GCSES, etc.)

  • Overall US grade point average (GPA)

  • Separately calculated Mathematics-only GPA

A list of evaluation service members may be found at the NACES accredited evaluation website.

If you attend an International High School patterned after a U.S. educational system outside the United States, you should proceed with completing the SSAR report.

3. Test Scores

Submit your SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) or ACT (American Achievement Test) scores. SAT and ACT test scores are required for all freshman applicants as well as for all students with less than 60 credits from an accredited post-secondary institution.

English Requirements

If you are an international student, whose first language is not English, you must demonstrate your proficiency in the English language.  

Non-Native English Speakers  are not required  to submit proof of English language proficiency if they meet one of the following:  

  • Completion of at least three years of secondary education from a high school based in the United States or abroad with full curriculum of instruction in English.  

  • Completion of at least three years of secondary education from a high school based in a country where English is the majority native-speaking language, or where English is the primary language of instruction starting in the primary grades.  

  • Completion of at least thirty (30) post-secondary credits, including ENC 1101 and ENC 1102, or the equivalent, with a  grade of C or higher, from a U.S. regionally accredited post-secondary institution or from a recognized post-secondary institution abroad with  full curriculum of instruction in English.  

  • Completion of at least sixty (60) post-secondary credits or an associate degree or higher from a U.S. regionally accredited postsecondary institution or from a recognized post-secondary institution abroad with full curriculum of instruction in English.

Course Information

The BA in Studio Art offers students a broad education in the visual arts. Students select three studio arts areas and take a beginning and an intermediate level class in each. The BA is a general degree in visual art. The Department also offers the BFA in Studio Art a specialized degree where focus is primarily in one visual art discipline such as ceramics, painting, photography, printmaking or sculpture as well as the BFA in Graphic Design. All studio art majors must submit for portfolio review.

BA Program Requirements

In addition to all University requirements, including the University foreign language graduation requirement, candidates for the Bachelor of Arts degree must meet the following requirements.

Core Program Prerequisites (22 credits/seven courses)

  • Art History Survey 1 (pass/fail not permitted), 3 credits

  • Art History Survey 2 (pass/fail not permitted), 3 credits

  • Design, 3 credits 

  • Drawing I, 3 credits 

  • Three-Dimensional Design, 3 credits 

  • Drawing II: Figure Drawing, 4 credits preq: ART 1300C

  • Introduction to Digital Art, 3 credits, preq:  ART1201C

Portfolio Review – students are advised to submit their portfolio for review following completion of their core program.

Studio Art Areas of Interest (24 credits, 6 courses/two courses in each of three different studio arts)

To complete this requirement students may select three course pairings from the following:

  • Painting 1, 4 credits

  • Intermediate Painting, 4 credits

  • Sculpture 1, 4 credits 

  • Sculpture 2, 4 credits

  • Printmaking 1, 4 credits 

  • Printmaking 2, 4 credits 

  • or 

  • Innovative Printmaking, 4 credits

  • Digital Photography 1, 4 credits 

  • Digital Photography 2, 4 credits 

  • or

  • Applied Digital Photography 2, 4 credit

  • Visual Design Lab 1, 4 credits 

  • Typographic Design Lab 1, 4 credit

  • Ceramics: Beginning Wheel, 4 credits 

  • Ceramics: Intermediate Wheel , 4 credits 

  • or 

  • Ceramics: Handbuilding 1, 4 credits 

  • Ceramics: Intermed. Handbldg, 4 credits

  • Narrative Drawing, 4 credits 

  • Advanced Drawing, 4 credits 

  • or 

  • Alternative Media, 4 credits

Art Electives ( 8 credits/ two courses in either upper level studio art or upper level art history)

Art History (minimum of 12 credits/three courses at the 4000 level); prerequisite for upper division Art History courses: Art History Survey 1 (ARH 2050) and Art History Survey 2 (ARH 2051).

Senior Seminar (4 credits/one course)

  • Senior Seminar for BA Studio Arts, 4 credits (Plan carefully: Senior Seminar is offered only in Fall and Spring terms. The Department requires that students take this course in the last semester of degree course work.)

Be sure that you have completed the prerequisites for each of the courses that you are planning to take. Check the prerequisites in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History section of the FAU catalog. Please sign up for an advising appointment each term to ensure you are making progress towards graduation.Note: The BA program requires that all students take 45 credits in visual art in addition to the credits earned in courses that are part of the Core Program Prerequisites. Transfer students from institutions with three-credit art courses are likely to need more credits in visual art than the minimum described above.

Transfer students should note that at least 75% of all upper-division courses for the BA must be taken in the Department of Visual Arts and Art History at FAU.
