Nomination Scholarship Programs
The William M. Bulger Award and Scholarship Program
- Provides four years of tuition and most mandatory fees annually to one outstanding high school graduate from a public or private high school in the city of Boston.
- Established in honor of William M. Bulger for many years of devoted service to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as a state representative, senator, and senate president; and as the past president of the University of Massachusetts.
- Recognizes and encourages an outstanding student who exemplifies President Bulger’s philosophy of perseverance in pursuit of educational and personal goals.
Nomination Procedure
- Each headmaster and high school principal must submit the required documents to the Office for Merit-Based Scholarships
- Only one graduating senior per school allowed
- Contact your school guidance office for consideration
- Not all nominees will be offered scholarships, only finalists
Requirements
- one letter of recommendation from the nominating headmaster or principal
- a typed essay of 500-1,000 words addressing the topic: “The Value of a College Education” by the nominee
- Massachusetts residency
Donor Scholarship Opportunities for New Students
Students who apply for early action admission are automatically considered for these scholarships, no application is necessary.
Please note many students may meet the eligibility requirements for an award but due to the limited number of scholarships available may not be selected for a particular award.
The Mark Atkins Scholarship
Alumnus Mark Atkins created this scholarship for newly entering freshman students who are longtime residents of the city of Boston.
Eligibility
Open to applicants who:
- have lived in Boston for ten or more years; Massachusetts residency,
- have demonstrable financial need,
- have strong academic potential, and
- have an entrepreneurial spirit.
The Samuel Brehm Scholarship
Awards up to $5,000 each to several recipients who are graduates of the Boston or Chelsea public school system. The award can be renewable.
Dr. Harold and Mrs. Ella Brehm established this scholarship program in 1987 in honor of Dr. Brehm’s father to encourage its recipients to pursue a four-year college education.
Eligibility
- must be a graduate of Boston or Chelsea public high schools
- have demonstrated strong academic potential,
- are in need of financial assistance, and
- are entering UMass Boston full-time as freshmen or transfer students
- Massachusetts residency
- a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), with information released to UMass Boston
The Stephen J. Sweeney Scholarship Program
Provides up to $2,700 for up to three students who have shown the potential for academic success.
Established to honor, preserve and extend the legacy of Stephen J. Sweeney, the former chairman and CEO of the Boston Edison Company. His outstanding achievements in business reinforced his commitment to give generously of himself to the community.
Eligibility
- open to applicants who have participated in school activities or community service
- graduates of a Boston public high school (Admissions Guaranteed Program [AGP] preferred)
- in need of financial assistance
- entering as freshmen
- a valid FAFSA with information released to UMass Boston
- Massachusetts residency
The Bernard R. Sneed Scholarship Program
Provides a $500 award, based on academic achievement and financial need, to one entering freshman annually.
Established by the UMass Boston Alumni Association to honor Bernard R. Sneed, community activist and graduate of UMass Boston who, as director of UMass Boston’s Columbia Point Field Office, played an important role in establishing the neighborly relationship between the university and the nearby community.
Eligibility
- open to applicants who are residents of the Harbor Point community or the surrounding neighborhood, and
- members of an ethnic group historically underrepresented in higher education
- a valid FAFSA, with information released to UMass Boston
- proof of Massachusetts residency
The Michael A. Ventresca Scholarship Program
Provides the recipient(s) with awards ranging from $2,000 to $4,000 annually. Awards may be renewable.*
Established to honor Michael Ventresca’s spirit of public service and his belief in the promise of democracy.
Michael A. Ventresca, president of UMass Boston’s first graduating class in 1969, was a political idealist, activist, and lawyer who died tragically in 1985.
Eligibility
- open to applicants who graduated from a Massachusetts high school; Massachusetts resident
- shows evidence of concern for others and an interest in public service through extracurricular activities or community service
- demonstrates the potential for academic success and the prospect of continuing in public service upon graduation
- a valid Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), with information released to UMass Boston
* Depending on funding levels and the number of students renewed, new scholarships may not be awarded every year.
The College of Education and Human Development Scholarship
A number of awards will be made to undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Education and Human Development in both the fall and spring semesters. There is a preference for students entering the practicum portion of their degree in the fall semester.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Be a full-time degree seeking student enrolled in the College of Education and Human Development
- Preference for students entering the practicum portion of their degree in the fall semester

Students must complete their application by 11:59 pm on Tuesday, September 10th, 2019. Late applications will not be considered. Winners will be notified in late October.

Eligible students can complete the general scholarship application here. CEHD students will then be prompted to answer three additional questions to be considered for these funding opportnities.
The Non-Resident Scholarship:
This scholarship opportunity is open to students who are are being charged out-of state tuition. U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and International Students are eligible to apply. Students who are selected as recipients for the Non-Resident Scholarship can expect awards between $500 and $2,000.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Students must have completed 24 credits at UMass Boston before the fall 2019 semester
- Open to out-of-state, New England Regional, and International Students.
- Must have a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA
- Must be enrolled as full-time, degree seeking undergraduate student

Students must complete their application by 11:59 pm on Friday, October 4th, 2019. Late applications will not be considered. Winners will be notified in late October.

The Rodick Scholarship:
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduate student who is Massachusetts resident and has graduated from UMass Boston with a bachelor’s degree. The recipient should be accepted into his/her first semester of a master’s program at UMass Boston in one of the following fields: American Civilization, Counselor Training, Education, Educational Administration, Special Education, School Psychology, Human Services, Applied Sociology, or Public Affairs.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a full-time student enrolled in a master’s degree at UMass Boston in one of the following areas: American Civilization, Counselor Training, Education, Educational Administration, Special Education, School Psychology, Human Services, Applied Sociology, or Public Affairs
- Must have completed an undergraduate degree from UMass Boston
- Must be a Massachusetts Resident
- Must have a FAFSA on file for the 2019/2020 academic year
Deadline:
Students must complete their application by 11:59 pm on Friday, October 18th, 2019. Late applications will not be considered. Winners will be notified in early November.

Eligible students can complete the general scholarship application here and must complete the scholarship specific question, “Did you earn a Bachelor’s degree from UMass Boston?” in the affirmative.
The Comprehensive Scholarship:
This scholarship is open to in-state students who meet the eligibility criteria below. This is our largest funding opportunity for the year with awards ranging from $500 to $5,000 for students selected for funding.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must have completed 24 credits at UMass Boston before the fall 2019 semester
- Must have a 3.3 or higher cumulative GPA
- Must be enrolled as an in-state, full-time, degree seeking undergraduate student

Students must complete their application by 11:59 pm on Friday, November 1st, 2019. Late applications will not be considered. Winners will be notified in early December.

The Robert and Jean O’Hara Scholarship:
The purpose of this fund is to award one or more students who meet the eligibility criteria below.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a full-time, in-state, degree-seeking undergraduate student
- Must be a resident of the City of Boston or Everett, Massachusetts
- Must have a FAFSA on file for the 2019/2020 academic year
- Must have completed a minimum of 12 credits at UMass Boston
Deadline:
Students must complete their application by 11:59 pm on Friday, November 1st, 2019. Late applications will not be considered. Winners will be notified in early December.

The Peter and Jackie Berlandi Scholarship
This scholarship is open to undergraduate students in any major who meet the eligibility criteria below.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be a graduate of a City of Boston high school
- Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher at UMass Boston
- Must be a full-time undergraduate student
- Students with federally determined financial need may be given preference
- Preference for students in the College of Nursing and Health Sciences
