About

General Description

Tasmania is one of the world’s most spectacular natural environments. Framed by beaches, snowfields and wilderness, from our stunning island home in Tasmania we’re free to think on a bigger scale. Whether it’s in our teaching, research, or even student lifestyle, this unique landscape has prepared us to connect to the world. We’re also fortunate to be right in Tasmania’s vibrant cultural heart. From our MONA inspired arts boom to our established food, wine and coffee culture, Tasmania’s towns and cities are as cosmopolitan as anywhere in Australia. Friendly, vibrant and always changing, Tasmania’s as good a place to live, as it is to learn.

Our ranking in the top two per cent of universities worldwide reflects our willingness to constantly challenge ourselves. We’ve never been afraid to take on the world – something we pass on to each of our more than 29,000 local, national and international students. Throughout their careers, this underpins the success of the 90,000 alumni we have spread across more than 120 countries.

Internationally recognised teaching programs and research institutes like the Australian Maritime College (AMC), Menzies Institute and Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies have built our reputation. With their vision and success, we’re standing out as an educational beacon and a global voice of learning.

Our commitment to the extraordinary tells the world one thing. Wherever you’re from – and wherever you’re headed – at the University of Tasmania you have the opportunity to use education to become whoever or whatever you want.

The University of Tasmania's Sandy Bay campus is in the beachside suburb of Sandy Bay, five minutes' drive south of the city centre. This scenic campus is close to shops, transport, accommodation, entertainment and services and is just a short walk from the Hobart CBD.

Why choose us?

Study outstanding courses in one of the world’s most extraordinary locations

Tasmania is unique and so are Tasmanians. We believe in our island. We embrace the unusual. And we love imagination.

We offer great courses in an extraordinary location, and our teaching is supported by world-leading research, so you know you’re getting direct access to the best expertise.

Our whole island is your campus

We know that if you’re in one of the world’s most extraordinary locations, you have to get outside, explore and live while you learn.

That’s why our courses give you the opportunity to explore nature and access adventure while you study, through field work and hands-on learning experiences that take you underwater, over seas and across our incredible island.

No matter which University of Tasmania campus you choose to study at, you will be close to stunning wilderness, and part of a vibrant and supportive community.

A focus on excellence

Our nationally-distinctive architecture, nursing, medicine and law courses give you access to real-life learning experiences. We’re the only university in the state, which means you will get unparalleled access to industry connections through our institution’s partnerships.

Our very island itself is a living laboratory, giving us excellent course strengths in the natural and social sciences. Being the gateway to the Southern Ocean gives us unique study offerings in marine, climate, Antarctic and ocean science and a broad range of maritime studies.

Spectacular student life

At our Cradle Coast campus you could live in our West Park Apartments right next to the Makers’ Workshop, where you can interact with real artisans at work. And a few more steps takes you onto the beach of one of the world’s most stunning coastlines.

In Hobart you could go from experiencing one of the world’s wildest art festivals, Dark Mofo, on the city’s iconic waterfront, to cycling around Maria Island, a remote, history-filled location with incredible cliffs and beaches, all within a day.
