Entry Requirements

The following items are required in order for international students to be considered for freshman or transfer admission to Otterbein University. Once all your application materials have been submitted, we can typically send you an application decision within 2-4 weeks.  Our application review is holistic, meaning it takes into consideration many factors such as your test scores, essay, and involvement outside of the classroom.

  • Common Application, including essay.

  • $50 Application fee.

  • Official transcripts/documents for four years of high school/secondary school (grades 9-12).

    • If mailed, transcripts must be in a sealed envelope, stamped by the school. Test results must be sent by the testing agency or directly from the high school to be considered official.

Upon acceptance you must send the following to intotterb@otterbein.edu:

  • Official Bank Statement(s) and Sponsor Guarantee form.

  • Copy of passport and current visa (if applicable).

Important Notes:

  • All test scores must be reported directly from the testing center.

  • Conditional admission is available to students that meet academic requirements, but still need additional language training to be successful in a U.S. classroom. Otterbein offers an English as a Second Language program on campus to help prepare students to become full-time degree seeking candidates.

  • Foreign language documents must be translated into English by the issuing institution, a certified translator or English teacher.

  • SAT and ACT test scores and letters of recommendation are optional and may be submitted if they strengthen your application.

Course Information

The creative writing major immerses you in the study of great literature and the art of generating your own fictions, poems, essays, plays, and screenplays. Through it, you come to know the elements of the writer’s craft and the imaginative energy of the writer’s life.

As a Creative Writing major, you will experiment with different creative forms, skills, styles, and devices; develop a distinctive creative voice and style across literary genres; gain advanced aptitudes in a specific genre; and discover the value of writing expertise across a wide variety of mediums, contexts, and professional settings. Holistically, the Creative Writing major will enable you to:

Read closely, critically, and with an aptitude for innovation

Write clearly, eloquently, and artfully

Know a rich range of literary terms, forms, genres, periods, theories, and writers

Study creative genres in distinct historical, cultural, biographical, formal, and theoretical contexts

See writing and literature as something that can enrich, complicate, and transform the human experience

Produce original, extended writing projects

The B.A. degree in Creative Writing (40 cr.) is ideal for students who want to hone their writing skills while double-majoring or minoring in at least one other discipline. Creative writing majors often add second majors or minors in art, theatre, or music; art history; psychology; communication; history, religion, political science; women’s, gender, & sexuality studies; race & ethnic studies; etc. The B.A. combines a thorough foundation in literary studies and critical thinking with the opportunity to specialize in a specific genre through the sequence of intermediate and advanced creative writing courses.

The B.F.A. in Creative Writing (59 cr.) is designed for students who plan to pursue graduate study or careers in writing, editing, or publishing. By providing more extensive, holistic advanced training and professional development with courses in editing, teaching in the community, and advanced special topics, the program prepares students to enter writing-related careers in publishing, editing, public service, or informal teaching. (Students interested in pursuing licensure to teach in public schools should look to the English/Education departments’ hybrid “Integrated Language Arts” program.)  Culminating in the completion of a Senior Creative Writing Project, the B.F.A. offers students the opportunity to work on their own creative manuscripts with an English faculty member throughout the spring semester of senior year.

Prospective students interested in pursuing the B.F.A. wishing to be eligible for talent awards should submit a creative writing portfolio upon application for admission to the university. Because the B.A. and B.F.A. curricula mirror each other through the first two years of study, students have the flexibility of choice between the two programs until their junior year when they must commit to one path.
