Admission Requirements

Entry requirement

We welcome applicants without traditional entry qualifications as we base decisions on our own assessment of qualifications, knowledge and previous work experience. We may waive formal entry requirements based on judgement of academic potential.

English requirement

If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests.

If you don’t meet the minimum IELTS requirement, we offer pre-sessional English courses, foundation programmes and language support services to help you improve your English language skills and get your place at Birkbeck.

Course Information

Accounting demands a range of transferable skills, including quantitative, analytical and decision-making skills, and perceptive abilities. You will develop a good understanding of accounting and the environment in which it operates and the ability to apply a wide range of accounting skills and competencies, from preparing financial statements to interpreting complex material and relating theory to practice.

The BSc Accounting has been designed to allow you to focus predominantly on accounting modules, while learning the supervisory and management skills that will give you the confidence to take on more challenges in the workplace. In your third year, option modules allow you to tailor the course to your interests, such as marketing, organisational behaviour or international finance.

Birkbeck has a diverse student community, which creates a stimulating and supportive learning environment. You will interact with peers possessing a broad range of experience, many of whom will have come directly from careers as administrators, clerical workers or managers, to develop more detailed and nuanced insights into accounting.

The course is taught entirely by evening study, enabling you to combine your academic studies with daytime commitments and gain invaluable practical experience during the day.

This course is also available for part-time evening study over four years.
