Course Information

The Associate Degree in Applied Technologies is a new pathway to a career in two exciting high-tech fields: Cyber Security and Cyber-Physical Systems (robotics and automation). This program has been developed in response to industry demand for graduates with practical skills in these rapidly expanding areas.

Throughout the program, you’ll acquire hands-on experience with real world issues facing almost every industry today, such as automation, information security and data analysis. With its work-based, industry-led delivery and its emphasis on applied technology, the program is a world away from traditional IT degrees. The two year (full time) duration also means that you’ll graduate faster with highly relevant work-ready skills. If you’ve never considered a career in IT but love all things ‘tech’, this program could be for you!

Industry experts have helped to develop the course and are actively involved in the delivery through teaching, site visits, case studies and work placements. This ensures that you’ll be equipped with best practice processes and skills for a rapidly developing career path.

The program is available for full-time and part-time study across all campuses in Tasmania and is delivered through a combination of online study, face-to-face classes, practical workshops and tutorials.

The specialisations currently available are Cyber Security or Cyber-Physical Systems (robotics and automation). In both specialisations, you’ll complete a major project applying the principles you’ve learned.

Career Opportunities with ICT

Graduates often enter technical positions, such as software programmer, network administrator, systems or business analyst, and web design/development. These allow you to apply your skills and knowledge while building on the industry experience already gained from your time studying with us.

Technical roles progress to management and leadership positions, typically with 3-5 years’ experience, setting you up in a career for life that goes wherever you want it to. These include project management, business analyst, testing/network/systems manager, database administrator, security specialist, and much more.

Career Opportunities with Science

While science career options are wide and varied, they typically fall into three main categories:

  • Specialist knowledge (e.g., geologist, marine biologist, IT systems developer).

  • Careers where a broad understanding of science is essential (e.g., science teacher, journalism, policy advisor).

  • Careers using generic skills obtained during your degree (e.g., public relations, business manager, marketing, government and local councils).
