Course Information

Art, music, literature—even as they’re distinguished by different languages and historical periods, they’re all interrelated. So why should you have to choose just one to study?

The humanities major lets you explore all of them, combining courses from history, art, music, drama, philosophy, World Languages and Cultures, English, and world literature into one interdisciplinary major. You can choose classes that reflect your interests, and write a thesis on something you’re passionate about.

Whether you want to compare different forms of art or examine history from multiple perspectives, the Humanities major exemplifies the true liberal arts experience, by giving you a strong background in a wide range of subjects and the freedom to investigate your own interests.

Learning Goals

Graduating humanities majors will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the concepts and approaches of at least two of the different disciplines contributing to the Humanities program: Art History, English, History, World Languages and Cultures (French/German/Hispanic Studies, International Literatures and Cultures), Music history, Philosophy, Theatre
  • Identify important questions within the interdisciplinary area of the Humanities and answer them by employing the methods of their chosen disciplines and cross-disciplinary thinking.
  • Employ a variety of analytic and interpretive skills to evaluate texts (critical analysis).
  • Use skills of clear and structured oral and written communication to express their perspective and support it with scholarly evidence.
