The Bachelor of Engineering with Honours (BE(Hons)) is a four-year undergraduate professional degree with a focus on digital-based technology. You'll build a solid grounding in mathematics and science through the design and implementation of real-world systems.

First year
In the first year you should complete all Part One courses of the BE(Hons). This will be seven or eight 100-level courses. Some of the courses you study will depend on which major you choose, so make sure to check the required courses for each major. Good results are essential if you are to proceed with a BE(Hons).
Computer program design, data structures and algorithms, engineering mathematics and modelling and engineering technology are just some of the subjects you look at during the first year of your Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.
You'll get a general introduction to engineering practice—covering basics of software, hardware and network systems. Then you get to apply this knowledge to complete a project—the Autonomous Vehicle Challenge.
In teams, you build a vehicle that has a processing board, motor driver and a network link to communicate its progress back to a central computer. The vehicle is then put to the test in a series of mazes—each one more difficult than the last.
If you don't know which major you want to do yet, you can talk to someone at the School of Engineering and Computer Science about choosing courses that will keep your options open.
Second, third and fourth year
To progress into the second part of the BE(Hons) you need to have passed all your Part One courses with at least a B average.
In this part of the degree you study 200-, 300- and 400-level courses covering subjects specific to your major, and learn about Professional Practice.
You also need to complete a work experience section. You'll spend 800 hours of approved work experience in two different engineering environments.
And to add variety and breadth to your Bachelor of Engineering with Honours degree you'll take some elective courses, allowing you to explore some interests outside the field of engineering.
In your third and fourth years of study, as well as your specialist and core courses, you'll work on projects that come right from the industry. You'll graduate university skilled and work ready.
If your grades are consistently good, particularly in your third and fourth years, you can be awarded the degree with First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (first division) or Second Class Honours (second division). To be eligible for a class of Honours you would normally complete your third- and fourth- year courses within three consecutive years at the most.
