Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • A levels, ABB including two of the following science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or Life and Health Sciences

  • Access to Higher Education Diploma, 30 credits at Distinction and 15 credits at Merit or higher including Science-related units.

  • BTEC National Extended Diploma, DDM. Please contact us at ug-admissions@york.ac.uk for details on whether your BTEC will be considered for entry.

  • Cambridge Pre-U, D3, M2, M2 including two of the following science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or Life and Health Sciences

  • European Baccalaureate, 75% overall including two of the following science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or Life and Health Sciences

  • International Baccalaureate, 34 points including two of the following science subjects at Higher level: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Environmental Studies, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or Life and Health Sciences

English Requirements

If English isn't your first language you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. We accept the following qualifications:

  • IELTS (Academic and Indicator), 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in each component

  • C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, 176, with a minimum of 169 in each component

  • Duolingo, 110 overall, with a minimum of 100 in each component

  • GCSE/IGCSE/O level English Language (as a first or second language), Grade C

  • LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, B2 Communicator High Pass with a minimum score of 33/50 in each component

  • PTE Academic, 61, with a minimum of 55 in each component

  • TOEFL, 87 overall, with a minimum of 21 in each component

  • Trinity ISE III, Merit in all components

 

Course Information

There has never been greater need for scientists who understand how the Earth system functions and responds to human activities, and who can apply this knowledge in the broader social and economic context of managing the environment to ensure a sustainable future.

Research-led teaching with a multidisciplinary focus will provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to address complex environmental problems such as climate change, air pollution and energy transitions.

Year 1

The first year modules give you an introduction to the fundamentals of environmental science, providing you with a foundation for more advanced material in the following years. 

Core modules

You will take core modules which may include:

  • Concepts in Environmental Science 

  • Data Analysis for Environmental Research 

  • Dynamic Earth 

  • Ecological Principles for the Environment 

  • Environment, Development and Society 

  • Environment Field Project for Environmental Science and Environmental Geography (currently to North York Moors National Park) 

  • Frontiers in Environmental Research

Year 2

You'll take a range of core modules to develop your knowledge of environmental science. You can then begin to tailor your degree to your own interests with a choice of option modules.

Core modules

You will take core modules which may include: 

  • Ecosystem Processes 

  • Environmental Geochemistry 

  • Climate Change: Science, Observation and Impacts 

  • Environmental Systems Project 

  • Residential Field Trip (currently to Tenerife) 

Option modules

You will take a selection of option modules, examples of which may include: 

  • Earth Processes and Landforms 

  • Energy and Environment 

  • Geographical Information Systems 

  • Biogeography 

  • Ocean Management and Conservation 

  • Economics of Sustainable Development 

  • Ecological Methodology 

Year 3

You specialise further in Year 3 with your independent research project, and a range of core and option modules.

Core modules

You will take core modules which may include:

  • Research Project 

  • Atmosphere and Ocean Science 

  • Pollution Monitoring, Assessment and Control 

Option modules

You will take a selection of option modules, examples of which may include: 

  • Land Use Change and Management: Perspectives from agriculture and forestry 

  • Environmental Hazards 

  • Biodiversity and Society 

  • Environmental and Natural Resource Economics
