Mission Statement
The Home Economics Department provides practical and theory-based skills for the hospitality industry, giving students a clear pathway into the workforce. We achieve this by offering a broad range of challenging and enjoyable activities.
Aims
· Develop a knowledge and understanding of food safety and its application in the home and workforce
· Develop the skills needed to prepare food successfully and safely at a personal level and as a shared responsibility
· Develop the skills for realistic catering situations, e.g. College restaurant and other catering events.
Year 12 Topics include – Use of multifunction equipment, designing new food products, food safety and investigating nutritional concerns
Year 13 Topics include – Food safety, creativity in presenting food and food for special occasions
Students have the opportunity to enter national competitions when available.
The department has fully trained, experienced teachers. There are two food rooms which each includes seven fully equipped kitchens, with microwave and multi-function oven. In addition to this, there are commercial gas hobs, dishwasher and fridges and a wide range of other smaller electrical appliances for students to use. Students have a broad range of cutlery and crockery which can be used to present their food in an appropriate and creative way. The department also has a full class set of chef uniforms available for catering activities.
