Entry Requirements

  • Year 12 level or the overseas equivalent.

  • Recognition of prior learning: You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen.

English Requirements

Course Information

The Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) will give you the skills to supervise a small residential or commercial project construction business. This course has been designed for people looking to start a career in the building industry, or people looking to change careers or re-enter the workforce.

This course can be undertaken full time, part time, or online, or a mixture of all three so you can fit your study around your work and personal life commitments.

This qualification will give you the knowledge of building structures under the National Construction Code (NCC), the legislation that accompanies any building project. It may also assist you to meet the requirements of the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to become a registered building practitioner in Victoria.

You will also learn about environmental management practices, safety and risk management, managing projects, contracts, structural principles and estimating and monitoring costs.

The strength of the program lies in its flexibility to adapt content to cover residential, industrial and commercial low rise and medium rise construction with special attention to management techniques, project work and prepare and evaluate tender documentation.

Upon completion, students can expect to have the knowledge and skills required of a builder, site manager, foreman or construction manager.

Course structure

To receive this qualification you must complete 13 core units and three elective units. Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications. The course has been designed to be completed in one year.

All learning and assessment resources will be provided through the Holmesglen learning management system, Brightspace, enabling the teacher to deliver units to either individual learners or small groups of learners. This will ensure that students' learning styles are accommodated and progress is structured to their skills, knowledge and understanding.
