The purpose of the Graduate Diploma of Orthodontics is to train and educate AHPRA registered dental graduates who want to enhance their orthodontic academic, clinical and technical skills and knowledge to enable them to successfully identify, treat and care for patients requiring orthodontic treatment.
Continue your busy dental practice while you study. This two-year part-time JCU course is offered from JCU's state-of-the-art Cairns Dental School, with extensive use of blended and online learning delivery methods. You'll have the opportunity to treat patients from initial record taking, diagnosis, treatment planning, bonding of fixed appliances and issue of retainers. These finished cases will be supervised and assessed by a national and international faculty.
The Graduate Diploma of Orthodontics requires compulsory face-to-face (at Cairns campus) and online attendance (via LearnJCU) on prescribed dates:
One-week face-to-face intensive clinical workshop (at the beginning of the course)
Six-weekly clinical sessions (Cairns campus) throughout the course (2 years).
Six-weekly online seminars/tutorials (via LearnJCU) throughout the course (2 years).
One -week face-to-face final exams/ finished cases (Cairns campus) at the end of the course.

Your Graduate Diploma qualification will equip you to serve the orthodontic treatment needs of a large cohort of patients who present with dental issues to which orthodontic treatment is the only solution.
This orthodontics course provides you with skills and knowledge that enable you to undertake clinical diagnosis and treatment for patients who require orthodontic treatment. When you graduate, you'll be able to offer an enhanced scope of care in a field of dentistry that is experiencing significant demand.
JCU graduates have acquired enhanced skills and knowledge to enable them to:
Apply the scientific basis of orthodontics, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to growth and development; diagnosis; treatment planning; and, clinical management of malocclusions.
Properly diagnose orthodontic dental malocclusions and skeletal discrepancies.
Formulate a competent treatment plan following consideration of the underlying aetiological factors and addressing the patient’s chief complaint.
Implement biomechanical methods to treat orthodontic cases.
Provide orthodontic treatment based on evidence-based dentistry.
Critically analyse orthodontic literature and apply it clinically.
