Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

Undergraduate degree, 2:1 or equivalent in a relevant discipline such as English Language, Linguistics or Education with a substantial English component

International pre-masters programme, Pre-masters from our International Pathway College

English Requirements

If English isn't your first language you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability. We accept the following qualifications:

  • IELTS, 7.0, minimum 6.0 in each component

  • C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, 185, minimum 169 in each component

  • Duolingo, 120, minimum 100 in each component

  • LanguageCert, C1 Expert High Pass with 33/50 in each component

  • PTE Academic, 67, minimum 55 in each component

  • TOEFL, 96, minimum 21 in each component

  • Trinity ISE III, Distinction in all components

Course Information

Extend your knowledge of the processes that underpin and facilitate language learning

You'll learn about new developments in applied linguistics research and will be able to reflect on these in light of your own practical expertise.

This course is designed for those with experience of teaching English as a second language.

Modules

You will take a total of 180 credits, including core modules, option modules and a dissertation, which you will complete as part of the Independent Study Module.

Core modules

You will take core modules which may include:

  • Language for Education 

  • Teaching and Learning Language 

  • Research Methods for Education I: Researching Questions 

  • Research Methods for Education II: Researching Answers 

Option modules

You will take at least one option module from a list similar to the following:

  • Teaching English for Academic Purposes 

  • Teaching World Englishes 

  • Testing and Assessment in English Language Teaching 

Your second option module can come from a list similar to the following:

  • Bilingualism 

  • Cross-linguistic Influences in Second Language Acquisition 

  • Intercultural Communication in Education

  • Language Curriculum Design and Evaluation 

  • Psychology of Language and Language Learning 

  • Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching 

  • Topics in Second Language Acquisition
