Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

An approved graduate qualification (e.g: Graduate Diploma in a planning or planning related field).

Selection criteria

  • Applicants with an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline or area and marks reflective of the capacity to work at the masters level will receive credit of up to 60 credit points.

    The following subjects will be credited as advanced standing for cognate students:

    • HUM5RE2 MASTERS RESEARCH THESIS/REPORT

    • 30 credit points of Elective subjects

    Applicants with an Australian Honours degree (or equivalent) in a cognate discipline or related area will receive credit of up to 120 credit points, including the subjects listed above.

    Applicants with over 2 years of relevant work experience may be eligible to receive credit of up to 60cp credit points.

English requirements

  • IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0

  • TOEFL Internet based (iBT): overall score of 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing.

  • La Trobe College Australia ELICOS (LTCA): completion of EFS level 6B with minimum 60% overall and 60% in final exam.

  • La Trobe College Australia Foundation Studies (LTCA): completion of Foundation studies with 60% in English (Academic Communication).

  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50.

  • Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component.

  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 169 with no less than 169 in any component

 

Course Information

The Master of Planning will allow you to work with community development planning agencies and non-governmental organisations in urban, regional and rural areas in Australia and overseas. It provides specialist knowledge and practical skills in a range of rural and regional development issues including: community development, healthy urban design, food security, child friendly and active environments, land-use planning and environmental and social policy at local, regional, national and international levels.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.

Planners work as part of multi-disciplinary teams in social and economic development projects in developed and developing countries.

Professional recognition

The Master of Planning is seeking accreditation by the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). Upon the outcome of the submission, graduates of the Master of Planning may be eligible for professional membership with the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA). Professional membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree.
