Academic entry requirement

Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Specialisation - Applicants must have at least a major study (6 units over three years, with no more than 2 units in the first year and no less than 2 units in the third year) in at least one of the following areas, and preferably at least a minor study (4 units over two years, with no more than 2 units in the first year) in a second area:

  • Arts (Drama, Visual Arts, or (Vic Only) Media)
  • Business Management (VIC)/Business studies (NSW)
  • Business and Economics
  • English
  • Health & Physical Education
  • Humanities and Social Sciences - history, geography, legal studies, society and culture
  • Languages
  • Mathematics
  • Outdoor Education (Vic Only)
  • Psychology (Vic Only)
  • Science (Biology, Chemistry or Physics)
  • English as an Additional Language/Dialect (EAL/D) (Vic Only)

Selection criteria

  • All applicants will complete a situation judgement test to support selection into teaching programs. This is a requirement for initial teacher training courses in Victoria and aims to assess an applicants personal and professional attributes. You can either register to sit the online CASPer Test or the La Trobe University School of Education Aptitude for Teaching Assessment (AFTA). You can register for the AFTA online test for free.

Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

 

English language requirement

  • 7.0 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 7.0 and a score of no less than 7.5 in Speaking and Listening.

Course Information

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) course prioritises explicit teaching, the fostering of effective reading skills, and quality instructional and assessment design to provide a comprehensive educator preparation course.

  • The School of Education develops graduates who are equipped with practical knowledge and skills which are informed by research and practice.
  • This course will assist you in understanding how the brain works during learning to develop your skills in understanding effective learning and managing classrooms to ensure social equity is core to your development as a teacher.
