Admission Requirements

Entry requirements:

​Grade 12 graduation or equivalent, or mature student status*

  • English 10 minimum or equivalent*
  • Any Math 11 with a grade of “C-“ or higher or equivalent*
  • Passing Verbal Test of English if ESL or equivalent*
  • Successful completion of the Online Computer Skills Entrance Test
  • Passing Stenberg College’s Admission entrance informational interview
  • Preference will be given to those with customer service experience
  • Preference will be given to those with any Science Grade 11 or 12 with a grade of C
  • Completion of Criminal Record Consent Form under the Criminal Record Review Act

* Entrance requirements can be met with evidence of alternate assessments such as Challenge Exams, or acceptable standardized English equivalency tests as per the Stenberg College Language Proficiency chart. Evidence of Post-Secondary studies at an equivalent level where English was the first language is acceptable.

English level:

  • Overall IELTS Test score of 6.0 with no component less than 6.0 for Speaking and Listening, 5.5 for Reading and Writing (or other ESL equivalencies as determined by Stenberg).
  • Must be within the last 2 years.

Other requirements:

Prior to Program Admission, Program Advisors will outline practice education requirements for the Optician Diploma program. Upon enrollment, students will be informed of next steps and timelines. Non-compliance with Practice Education requirements could result in program dismissal. Requirements for practice education placements include:

  • Acceptable Criminal Record Review with Vulnerable Sector Check by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General
  • Proof of Immunity Status as required by industry

About the Program

Opticians are integral members of the eye-care team who design, produce and fit eyeglasses, contact lenses and specialized products for their clients. If you are customer focused, organized and enthusiastic and want to work as part of a healthcare team, consider a career as a Licensed Optician.

Stenberg’s Optician Diploma program has been organized to ensure graduates gain skills in key areas valued within the field. Through theory and lab courses, students gain a comprehensive education in the areas of eyeglass dispensing, contact lens fitting and automated refraction. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal communication, customer service and professional practice. This program prepares students to successfully complete the National Licensing Exam.
