Course Information

For entry to a postgraduate degree at the University of Essex. Your course length is determined mainly by your English language level (UKVI IELTS score or accepted equivalent).

All students take a set of common or similar modules to gain key skills for university. If your course is longer than 2 terms, you’ll take extra modules focusing on one or more of English language, academic skills and basic subject knowledge.

  • IELTS 5.5 course  (at least 5.0 in all skills) : You 'll study 2 terms ( start in January 2022 or March 2022 ) 
  • IELTS 5.0 course  (at least 5.0 in all skills): You will study 2,5 terms (start in November 2021 or January 2022 or July 2022 )
  • IELTS 5.0  course (at least 4.5 in all skills): You will study 3 terms (Start in June 2022)
  • IELTS 4.5 course  (at least 4.5 in all skills): You will study 3,5 terms ( May 2022 or July 2022)
  • IELTS 4.5 course (at least 4.0 in all skills) : You will study  4 terms (March 2022 or June 2022)

Common modules taken by all students:

You will also take 2 of the following modules to prepare for postgraduate study :

  • Advanced Social Science
  • Philosophy, History and Culture
  • Project Management
  • UK Society and Culture (Advanced)

Extra support:  for most courses of over 2 terms, you will take additional modules from a selection of Enhancement and Extended English and Skills options (depending mainly on your IELTS score) before the modules to the left.

Students with UKVI IELTS 5.0 will typically take these additional modules as part of a 2.5 or 3-term course:

  • English for Academic Study 3
  • Independent and Collaborative Study
  • Reading and Writing 3
  • Speaking and Listening 3

Students with UKVI IELTS 4.5 will typically take these additional modules as part of a 3.5 or 4-term course:

  • English for Academic Study 2 + English for Academic Study 3
  • Independent and Collaborative Study
  • Reading and Writing 2 + Reading and Writing 3
  • Speaking and Listening 2 + Speaking and Listening 3
