All applicants are required to gain a recognised English language qualification before entering any of our courses. For pre-sessional English programmes and courses below degree level, this must be one from a list of UK government recognised tests, most commonly IELTS. For degree level programmes (bachelors, masters and PhD), we consider a wide range of international qualifications.
IELTS for UKVI score required for the Pre-sessional course: 5.5 (minimum of 5.0 in all skills)

Study on a British Council-accredited course.
If you need to improve your English in preparation for your studies, this British Council-accredited intensive course is designed for you. Our team of experienced, qualified tutors will support you to develop academic study skills and your practical language skills through written assessments and exams, course books, lectures, presentations and seminars. You will meet representatives from your future college. Classes are limited to a maximum of sixteen students. Once you have successfully completed the course and met any other entry conditions needed for your degree, you will receive an unconditional offer for your Sheffield Hallam University degree course.
How you learn
You will meet your lecturer daily (Monday to Friday), and follow a clear schedule that includes listening, reading, writing and speaking development tasks. Each weekday, you will be given a range of independent or group study tasks. You will receive personal feedback on your work and you will also have one-to-one or small group tutorials to help you to focus on important areas of development.
Assessments include speaking, reading, writing and listening assessments, and a written portfolio.
Applied learning
Throughout the course, we support you in the completion of your written portfolio: this includes a focus on your future course.
You will identify an area of your future course that interests you and use academic skills to find a specialist text for your future course.
You will analyse your specialist text by focusing on academic language including definitions, perspective and stance, citation and referencing.
You will make three short presentations based on your specialist text.

The course prepares you for academic study rather than directly for employment. However, the academic skills learnt on the course are also valuable in employment.
In addition to improving communication skills, you develop independent, critical thought and self-directed learning, the ability to find data, the ability to use information technology effectively, time management and team working.
You'll also gain the ability to evaluate your own progress and to give and receive feedback effectively, and an international awareness based on respect for social and cultural diversity.
