UNE was formed in 1938 as the New England University College, a College of the University of Sydney. The University became fully independent in 1954 and pioneered teaching to external students by correspondence, making UNE Australia's most experienced provider of distance and now online education.

The BA involves the study of human societies from a variety of historical, geographic, sociological, scientific, religious, literary and artistic perspectives. Disciplines in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences offer an intellectually exciting education that provides both vocational skills and the foundation for lifelong learning. The Bachelor of Arts course provides the skills of independent thinking and cultural awareness that underline the creation of an equitable, humane and inventive society.
At UNE you will be invited to combine an initial breadth of study with an eventual depth of understanding. You start by choosing units from four or more subject areas, before specialising in those areas that hold your interest. You will finish with at least one major from the 33 subject areas available. You will develop both a set of specific skills, and a breadth of knowledge, allowing for a more flexible response to the many opportunities in respect to work, postgraduate study, or personal interests.
