Admission Requirements

Entry Requirements

The general admission requirement for entry to the undergraduate programme of study is a High School Leaving Certificate or equivalent qualification.

Regular Academic Admission

Regular admission to academic programmes requires a recognised High School Leaving Certificate with a grade of 7.5 out of 10 or 15 out of 20 or a rank in the top 50%, or equivalent qualifications.

In addition to the above all applicants are expected to submit a portfolio of art/design/multimedia, ideally in both electronic and physical form.

Portfolios will be submitted by the applicant during an interview, which may be conducted online, scheduled by the University of Nicosia and will be assessed by the Department’s admissions panel. The interview takes the form of a discussion around the applicant’s range of skills and interests, focusing on the portfolio of work in graphic and/or multimedia design, the arts or related areas.

The interview and portfolio review is a two-way process and assesses students’ skills and interests; students are given the opportunity to ask questions about the programme and the Department and to have a look at the facilities.

Special Academic Admission

This category of admission may be offered to students who possess a High School Leaving Certificate but who do not have the stipulated grades or other requirements for regular admission.

English Requirements

Students may be required to take NEPTON, UNIC’s English Placement Test at no charge, before registering for classes, unless they have passed an internationally recognized English examination which indicates their level of English proficiency.

Students with the following English qualifications will register directly for their academic programme of study:

  • TOEFL – 500 and above
  • Computer-based TOEFL – 173 and above
  • Internet-based TOEFL – 61 and above

  1. Provide an integrated, stimulating education in design for students who wish to obtain a firm grounding in the practice of the subject, informed by theory and history.
  2. Equip students with the understanding and appropriate skills to operate effectively within a competitive and diverse design industry.
  3. Stimulate students to develop their own interests within the broad field of enquiry offered by the subject and to develop a range of intellectual, visual, technical and social skills.
  4. Provide learners with the means for lifelong learning within the professional or educational environment.
  5. Provide reflective and responsive graphic design training which is directly relevant to the changing needs of the creative and manufacturing industries.
  6. Develop a range of processes and skills, including design studio skills, multimedia skills, as well as business awareness and historical and theoretical knowledge in order to test individual ideas and solutions.
  7. Encourage students to become more self critical, display critical judgment and challenge assumptions and prejudice.
  8. Provide students with the opportunity to study and practice graphic design in the context of the area of visual communication or engage in postgraduate study.
  9. Make students aware of the professional practice of graphic design; this will be achieved through a programme of work that combines visiting lecturers from industry, real-life projects, competitions and study visits.
  10. The programme has both an academic and a market orientation. It focuses on studying and discussing developments in the graphic communication academic field but it also reflects the needs and requirements of the national and international graphic design industry.
