Course Information

Civil engineers find creative ways to solve real-world problems, developing the physical infrastructure for society to exist – from bridges to houses, and from roads to hospitals and train stations. This course provides a broad civil engineering education and will give you the design, analysis and construction skills needed for the industry.

You'll be equipped with the abilities necessary for developing sustainable and cost-effective design ideas. Through industry-facing projects, site visits and a work placement year, the course will give you the skills needed to begin a successful career. You'll learn about structures, materials, geotechnics and mathematics and develop an applied understanding of practical engineering techniques to find innovative solutions to real-world built environment challenges.

Why study this course?

  • Industry-standard facilities | Experience hands-on learning in our modern facilities and workshops, including concrete, soils and materials laboratories and support from our team of expert technicians.

  • Professional status | Take the first step in gaining Incorporated Engineer status – this course is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base for an Incorporated Engineer (IEng).

  • Placement year | Gain vital skills and experience in the workplace by undertaking a one-year placement on our sandwich route. Previously, students have spent their placements at companies such as AECOM, Curtins Consulting and Jackson Civil Engineering.

  • Outstanding employability | 95% of our BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering sandwich students are in work or further study within six months of finishing their studies, earning an average salary of £27,900 (latest DLHE survey, 2016-2017).

  • Progression opportunities | Tailor your studies to suit your strengths and interests, with opportunities to transfer on to the BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering course, from which you could progress to our MEng (Hons) Civil Engineering Design and Construction course.
