Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 4) or equivalent.

If you have undertaken examinations other than NCEA (e.g. International Baccalaureate, Cambridge Examination), Ara will assess your qualification for academic entry equivalency.

English requirements

  • IELTS: Academic score of 5.5 with no band score lower than 5.0
  • TOEFL Paper-based Test (pBT): Score of 550 (with an essay score of 5 TWE)
  • TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT): Score of 46 (with a writing score of 14)
  • Pearson Test of English: PTE (Academic) score of 42 with no band score lower than 36
  • Cambridge English Qualifications: B2 First or B2 First for schools with a score of 162. No less than 154 in each skill;
  • OET: Minimum of Grade C or 200 in all sub-tests
  • NZCEL: a) Level 4 (General) or (Workplace) b) Level 4 (General) or (Employment)
  • LanguageCert: B2 Communicator IESOL (LRWS) with HIGH PASS and no less than Pass in each skill
  • Trinity ISE: ISE II with no less than merit in any band

Course Information

Gain the cooking skills and expertise needed to produce advanced dishes and take a leading role in commercial kitchen environments.

During the course of this one-year programme you'll acquire the skills to confidently plan and produce a broad range of meat, poultry, fish and larder dishes, employing advanced preparation, cookery and presentation techniques. You'll also learn effective methods for planning and monitoring workflow, strategies for managing staff and operations to meet performance targets, and how to plan, develop and design dishes and menus.
