Course Information

Through this programme of study students will come to understand that History is far more than names, dates, rulers and wars. History is the study of human beings in time, across time and in various places. It seeks meaning in events and developments, and to understand women and men in their settings in order to make sense of their lives and experiences. It is a cultural subject, besides a political and economic one, which, when studied with an open mind, leads to one's enrichment and a better understanding of the present.

In order to properly appreciate Maltese history, one needs to do so within a strong contextual framework that takes into consideration historical developments as well as historiographical practices. Key international debates such as encounters or clashes of civilization, imperialism and postcolonialism, and much else will be addressed through the Maltese example by placing them in a context of engagements with other countries and cultures.

The main aim of this programme is to enable students to gain a deep understanding of the history of Malta. It aims to deliver a very structured programme of learning through which a student with little or no knowledge of History will be able to build up her/his expertise. The programme of study is structured as follows: the first year will have a chronological and methodological accent, which will give a clear picture of developments and historical debates, while the second year will have more of a thematic accent, through which it will be possible to delve in detail into particular aspects (from art to minorities) that help to enrich one’s understanding of the past.

Students who successfully complete the study-units offered during the first year of the course (30 ECTS credits) would be eligible for a Certificate, or they may proceed onto the next year of the course. At the end of the 2nd Year of the course, students who successfully complete the study-units included in the programme (60 ECTS) will be eligible for the Diploma.

Career Opportunity

Career Opportunity

This Diploma (and the Certificate option) will aim to foster intellectual, analytical, critical and organizational skills that will be of value in any future career. While a diploma / certificate cannot be compared to an undergraduate degree, the experience of History graduates in recent years shows that there are many and varied work environments where a proper grounding in History is an asset and much appreciated.

Furthermore, it is envisaged that it may be possible for students of the Diploma to transfer some of their study-units towards a degree in History, or the Bachelor of Arts in Humanities, should they decide to persevere with their studies.
