International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training):

  • overall score 6.5

  • no sub-test less than 6.0

  • or equivalent scores in another recognised qualification (see below)

  • CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): 176 overall: no sub-test less than 169

  • CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English): 176 overall: no sub-test less than 169

  • PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English, Academic test): 60; no sub-test less than 59

  • IGCSE: English as a First Language (0500/0522): C in Reading and Writing, plus 1 in Listening, 2 in Speaking, where applicable. All four components (listening, writing, speaking, reading) must be examined and detailed on results slip

  • IGCSE: English as a Second Language (0510/0511): A in Reading and Writing, plus A in Listening, 2/B in Speaking, where applicable. All four components (listening, writing, speaking, reading) must be examined and detailed on results slip

  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English: ISEII at Distinction with Distinction in all sub-tests

* Please note that TOEFL is still acceptable for admission to this programme for both home/EU and international students.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use TOEFL to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level courses. We therefore still accept TOEFL tests taken in the last two years for admission to this programme.

Course Information

The Master of Education programme is an internationally recognised teaching qualification with a strong focus on the theory of learning and on how theory and practice are effectively used in the classroom to support all learners in the 21st century.

You can exit after four years with an MA (Hons) in Education with Teaching Qualification or complete your fifth year and qualify with the MEduc.

Year 1

You will learn about the nature of learning in the primary curriculum, child development theories, curricular theory and professional practice and identity. You will also choose form a selection of courses from the wider University. You will have three weeks out on school placements. If you intend to follow the Catholic Teacher’s Certificate in Religious Education, you are offered the opportunity to study theology.

Year 2

You will begin to study the role of education in society and consider the interconnectedness of the wider society on schools and schooling. You will learn about educational philosophers and explore in greater depth pedagogical content knowledge and their associated curriculums. You will have a five-week placement in school

Year 3

 You will expand upon your knowledge and understanding of the primary curriculum and your ability to reflect and improve on your own practice. You will also be given the opportunity to choose an area of study from a number of elective courses. You will have a total of 12 weeks out in school placement.

Year 4

Analysis of links between modern day Scottish society and global influences like eco pedagogy are studied. Effective classroom practice and a focus on enquiry- based learning and inclusion. A further Elective is chosen. You have a 12-week school placement.

Year 5

You will undertake a research course in Professional enquiry & decision-making to develop your approach to evidence-based research. Thereafter, you will undertake a dissertation to qualify with the MEduc.

Foundation Certificate for Business and Social Sciences

For entry to the 2nd year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow. Your course length is determined mainly by your English language level (UKVI IELTS score or accepted equivalent).

All students take a set of common or similar modules to gain key skills for university. If your course is longer than 2 terms, you’ll take extra modules focusing on one or more of English language, academic skills and basic subject knowledge.
