Business analytics is the practice of evaluating data to extract insights that help organizations make better business decisions and solve problems. It is widely recognized as a strategic necessity in today’s competitive business environment and is a growing career field. The program prepares students for such jobs as data analysts, finance/credit analysts and market research analysts.
You will learn not only how to analyze data, but you will also gain the technical skills necessary to collect the data, along with communication skills, managerial skills and decision-making skills. You will study topics like data mining, database management systems, business forecasting models and business programming. By the time you graduate, you will be able to turn a variety of business data into a competitive advantage.
This program offers advanced courses in data mining, database management systems, simulation and Big Data to help guide businesses in improving processes through data analysis.
You will also learn how to use database management systems to support electronic business. Topics include data modeling, database design and normalization, structured query language (SQL), database application development, integration of web server and database server, distributed data-bases, data warehousing and data mining. You will also be introduced to tools such as Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). More specifically, you will learn how to write programs that automate various tasks in Excel, and develop applications that support business decision making.
Housed in the Department of Operations and Information Management, this major will also be flexible and allow students to take courses that are cross-listed with operations management, including the opportunity to obtain a minor in operations management. There is also a concentration/minor available in business analytics.
