About

General description

Our vision is to be recognised worldwide as a leading university for inspiring learning, advancing knowledge and enriching society through the fusion of education, research and practice.

Bournemouth University has more than 19,000 students and we are ranked as one of the top 200 young universities in the world, but our ambition doesn’t stop there.

I am immensely proud of the quality of the teaching at Bournemouth University, which was recognised in June 2017 when we achieved a silver award in the Teaching Excellence and Student Outreach Framework (TEF). This award has now been extended, to 2021.

Our research shapes and changes the world around us, providing solutions to real-world problems and informing the education we deliver. Our students are a key part of the research we conduct, co-creating knowledge with us and playing a crucial role in everything that we do. In the Research Excellence Framework 2014 96% of our research was defined as internationally recognised or higher, with 72% deemed to have an outstanding or very considerable impact on society.

We work closely with employers, practitioners and professional organisations across BU. This supports graduate employability as well as informing our research. All students are offered the option to undertake a placement as part of their degree, resulting in 86% of our graduates saying that their placement helped them in their employment (November 2017). 92.3% of Bournemouth University students are in work or further study six months after graduating at undergraduate level (DLHE survey 2016).

Our vision of Fusion brings together these three key elements of education, research and practice, creating something which is greater than the sum of its parts. Through the impact of our research and education, and the contribution of our staff, students and graduates, we are able to deliver the third aspect of our purpose, to enrich society.

Bournemouth University benefits from a wonderful location, situated between one of the UK’s newest national parks, officially the best beach in Britain (according to TripAdvisor, 2018) and the second largest natural harbour in the world, with the World Heritage Jurassic Coast located nearby. Good transport links means that London is only two hours away.

Bournemouth University plays its part in this local economy, contributing over £1 million per day to the South West region. We employ around 1,800 staff and we are investing £250 million in our buildings, IT and facilities between 2012 and 2020.

With all this activity comes a responsibility to the environment and we are delighted to hold the EcoCampus platinum award for our work in making the university sustainable. From bee hives to solar panels, free or subsidised bus journeys for staff and students and a raft of other initiatives, we continually seek to increase our sustainable impact.

Our strategic plan, BU2025, sets out our vision, values and outcomes, with the Fusion of education, research and practice at its heart.

I hope you enjoy looking around our website, which gives a flavour of life here at Bournemouth University. I would encourage you to get in touch or come and visit us, if you would like to find out more.
