Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • You should have completed a sport and/or science-related Aotearoa New Zealand degree, or equivalent, and normally should have achieved at least a B Grade Point Average in 300-level courses in the degree for enrolment in the Postgraduate Certificate in Sport Science.

English requirements

  • IELTS: Academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • TOEFL iBT: Total minimum score of 90, with at least 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.
  • TOEFL PBT: With a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
  • CCEL EAP: Level 2 with a minimum C+ grade
  • CAE or CPE: minimum score of 176 with at least 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
  • NZCEL:  Level 5

Course Information

The Postgraduate Certificate in Sport Science gives students expertise in a career in the sporting industry, or allows those already the in the field an opportunity to upskill and update their sport science knowledge.

  • Specialist Postgraduate Certificate in sport science.
  • Findings from the 2013 Sport and Recreation Sector Workforce to 2026 Survey indicate that in Aotearoa New Zealand, up to 44,000 new staff will be required in the sector due to growth and retirements by 2026.
  • Lecturers are involved in sport science or health as active researchers and supervisors, as well as serving professional bodies in their discipline.
  • The field of sports science is developing rapidly and so this Certificate will allow students to stand out in a competitive job market.

PGCertSS requires a compulsory course and 30 points of optional courses.

Compulsory course:

  • SSCI 403 The Competitive Edge: Innovation in Sport Science

Optional courses:

A minimum of 30 points selected from the list of courses. Courses cover areas such as exercise science, biomechanics, sport psychology, nutrition, or health behaviour change.

SSCI 407 and 408 will be offered and tailored to the direction of study for each student.

  • SSCI 407 Advanced Strength and Conditioning (30 pts)

  • SSCI 408 Sport Science Independent Study (30 pts)

  • BIOL 462 Medical Biochemistry (15 pts)

  • BIOL 481 Environmental Animal Physiology (15 pts)

  • HLTH 409 Health and Culture (30 pts)

  • HLTH 430 Motivating Behaviour Change I (30 pts)

  • HLTH 431 Motivating Behaviour Change II (30 pts)

  • HLTH 463 Whānau and Community Health (30 pts)
