Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • Students for the PGCertTREO must have a relevant bachelor’s degree, with a B Grade Point Average or better in 60 points of their 300-level major subject courses, and have had at least three years of experience in the Māori sector.
  • Students without a bachelor’s degree must have extensive practical, professional, or scholarly experience of an appropriate kind.
  • All applicants will also be required to submit a portfolio of professional experience, and attend a selection interview.

English requirements

  • IELTS: Academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • TOEFL iBT: Total minimum score of 90, with at least 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.
  • TOEFL PBT: With a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
  • CCEL EAP: Level 2 with a minimum C+ grade
  • CAE or CPE: minimum score of 176 with at least 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
  • NZCEL:  Level 5

Course Information

The Postgraduate Certificate in Te Reo Māori (PGCertTREO) offers speakers the opportunity to further develop their language skills and receive professional recognition of their development. The PGCertTREO is an ideal option for those without previous university study in te reo, or university study in general, who have significant experience in the language and work in the Māori sector.

The Certificate also allows speakers of te reo Māori to enter into advanced postgraduate study in the Master of Te Reo Māori.

  • TREO 404 Mahi-a-Rehia

The other 30 points towards the Certificate can be chosen from 400-level Te Reo Māori courses.
