Admission Requirements

Entry requirements

  • To enrol, you should have previously completed a sport and/or science-related Aotearoa New Zealand degree, or an equivalent qualification, and normally should have achieved at least a B Grade Point Average in your 300-level courses

English requirements

  • IELTS: Academic with an average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • TOEFL iBT: Total minimum score of 90, with at least 19 in reading, writing and listening. Please note UC only accepts TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date, not MyBest scores.
  • TOEFL PBT: With a minimum score of 575 and TWE with a minimum score of 4.5
  • CCEL EAP: Level 2 with a minimum C+ grade
  • CAE or CPE: minimum score of 176 with at least 169 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic): PTE with an overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50
  • NZCEL:  Level 5

Course Information

This Diploma allows students to develop their expertise in sport science and health industries.

The one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Sport Science (PGDipSS) can lead to career pathways in high performance sport, non-clinical health, or fast-track careers of existing professionals in those industries.

  • Specialist diploma in sport science.
  • Findings from the 2013 Sport and Recreation Sector Workforce to 2026 Survey indicate that in Aotearoa New Zealand, up to 44,000 new staff will be required in the sector due to growth and retirements by 2026.
  • Lecturers are involved in sport science or health as active researchers and supervisors, as well as serving professional bodies in their discipline.
  • The field of sports science is developing rapidly and so this Diploma will allow students to stand out in a competitive job market.

60 points in total are selected from the following list of courses.

The courses SSCI 407 and SSCI 408 will be offered and tailored to the direction of study for each student.

Courses cover such areas as exercise physiology, biomechanics, sport psychology, sport nutrition, or health behaviour change.
