Course Information

Computer software is all around us. From commercial activities like shopping on Amazon through to government departments, from manufacturing processes, to environmental, and personal use, it plays a part in so many industries and activities, where a small change could make a huge difference to society. This STEM course aims to give you an understanding of what’s possible, and where your skills could take you, as well as guiding you in developing hands-on, practical skills and understanding the human and social contexts of software systems.

Software engineering is all about finding practical solutions to real problems. To succeed, employers will want you to be able to produce software that is robust, sustainable, reliable and attractive to use – all at a reasonable cost and to a certain timeframe. This course has been designed to provide you with a deeper, specialist knowledge of software engineering than the BSc(Hons) version of the course. You’ll study for an extra year with the aim of gaining an MEng qualification. Your extra year of study gives you opportunities for project work and developing pieces of working software, designed to prepare you for a lasting and rewarding career in software development.

The opportunities open to you as a software engineer are forever changing, as industries develop and introduce new innovation. We want to give you the knowledge and skills to succeed in this exciting and fast paced environment. You’ll be able to explore the latest techniques that software developers use. You’ll have the chance to:

  • Explore contemporary methods and techniques in software development
  • Develop the flexibility and adaptability you’ll need for a long-term career

During your studies you’ll be able to use the high-standard computing facilities we have on campus, including a range of machines running a variety of operating systems and software. The course emphasis is on guiding you in developing hands-on, practical skills in software development, as well as an understanding of the human and social contexts of software systems.

To put the skills you’ve learnt into practice, after your second year you’ll be given the chance to take an optional placement. You could gain some crucial real-world experience that could give you the edge when it comes to finding a rewarding career. The final year of your MEng course gives you the chance to get involved in project work, and you’ll also study more advanced software development techniques and management topics.

The course is accredited by the British Computer Society (BCS), the chartered institute for the IT industry.
